Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Best first year for a Nintendo console (pre-Switch)

Which had the best first year?

NES 0 0%

SNES 12 30.77%

N64 7 17.95%

GC 3 7.69%

Wii 17 43.59%

Wii U 0 0%

Total:39

As we gear up for the first year of Switch 2, which of Nintendo's consoles before the Switch do you think had the best lineup of games in it's first 12 months, and what makes your pick worthy of the top spot?

For the record, here are some of the key titles for each:

NES (Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Excite Bike, Golf, Ice Climber, Wild Gunman, Hogan’s Alley)

SNES (Super Mario World, F-Zero, Street Fighter II, Final Fantasy IV, Contra III, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts)

N64 (Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Starfox 64, Mario Kart 64, Pilot Wings 64, Turok)

GC (Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, Rogue Squadron II)

Wii (Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Wii Sports, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn)

Wii U (New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Call of Duty Black Ops II, ZombiU)

Out of those? Probably a tie between SNES and N64. Although, what the NES did coming from a new company after the crash... that's probably the most impressive.

It's between GameCube and Wii.
I'll pick Wii for having Super Mario Galaxy and some other fun games like Super Paper Mario and Wii Sports.

The Twilight Princess + Super Mario Galaxy + Wii Sports combo is way too good, so that's my pick

Man, this really reinforces that Nintendo is king of the launch titles.

In its first 12 months — at least in North America — SNES had Super Mario World, Final Fantasy IV, F-Zero, Super Castlevania IV, Contra III, A Link to the Past, Turtles in Time, and a few others. That’s my pick.

Fun thread idea!

I forgot all about Contra III! My bad; have added it to the list. And thanks :)

Post-launch. You had to wait months before another N64 game launched. For months N64 only had 3 games. Yes, good games but even then just 3 while PS1 was pumping them out. Severe drought.

Razor thin between GCN and Wii…but I grew up on GCN, so the choice is clear for me. Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros Melee, Star Fox Adventures, and Pikmin is an unstoppable bunch of releases.

SNES and it's not even close. It launched with the best launch game and best Mario game of all time. Super Mario World. SF II changed an entire genre and was a cultural phenom. I was there. Castlevania IV is the best in the series. Same for Contra III. F-Zero and Pilot Wings as new IPs. Both great games. SNES was magic from the day it launched until it's end.

N64. I mean, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64 and GoldenEye. Those are all-time classics and among the best games ever.

The Wii comes decently close, with Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy but still easily behind N64. I guess SNES is third, it’s a good list of games, but I always found Mario World inferior to SMB3.
