Oh yeah, I think I remember it now on ps1 and PS2, where you're like a Ninja running over roof tops and they were really punishing games. Yeah, I kinda liked them but they were way to difficult for my child brain.

Edit: I'm thinking of Tenchu. I looked up Shinobi and never seen it in my life.

Tenchu was great! Had the first one on PS1 and Wrath of Heaven on PS2 and loved them both. Very unique games in how they played. Another brutal Ninja game that I felt was underrated and no one talks about is Ninja Shadow of Darkness, this game kicked my ass and I enjoyed every second of it. I had a thing for Mythologies Sub-Zero too. It goes without saying all of those had more differences than similarities and weren't really in the same genre, let alone sub-genre.

Shinobi-PS2 was very basic but fun, challenging, and gloomy in a good way. It wasn't in the same league to me as Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, and Shinobi 3 on the MegaDrive. Myself and my brother played DMC2 soon after Shinobi-PS2 and disappointingly said "DMC has fallen so low, Capcom is shamelessly copying Shinobi's monster tanks, except the game is so much worse" lol. It also got a sequel named "Nightshade" which I didn't play. Nightshade's protagonist was a hot af no-nonsense kunoichi. I'd let her slay me... and maybe step on me :)

Were the Techu games as difficult as I remember or was it just that I was a child? I wouldn't mind another Tenchu game now that it seems we're getting all those old games coming back from the dead. Perhaps too much all at once and they'll cannibalise each other and then studios will say, we'll that didn't work and never try again. We must support them as fans of the genre even if they release a bit underwhelmingly.

Funny ai never heard of these games but I went straight from a hand me down NES to a PS1, the only Mega Drive was counties away at a distant cousins house to play once ever two or three years and fucked if I can remember what was played but I don't remember the graphics being that good that I'd feel attracted to characters, lol but to each there own. Someday VR will be good enough you may get your wish, keep your health in order so you can be spry for that happy day.

Shinobi? Yeah I guess unless you were a Sega console fan in the 80s/90s, you wouldn't have much knowledge on the franchise.

If you have a PS2, there was a 3D action Shinobi game that released which was very character action oriented like others you'll find in this thread. It was a really fun game, but of course got overshadowed by likes of Devil May Cry. The rest of the series has primarily been 2D side scrolling. I'm really looking forward to the new one!

Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. The unexpected return of 2D action games!

Shinobi was never released on PS1. SEGA was making consoles then and Sony was the competition. There was a Saturn Shinobi game but it was 2D. Shinobi on PS2 and Nightshade were 3D. SHonobi on PS2 is fucking amazing. Brutally hard much like Ninja Gaiden of the day. Tho Otogi makes both of them seem easy.

As for tenchu they ranged in quality. PS1 game was good from Aquire. Some of the worst ones were made by Fromsoft esp that 360 one...oof. The first three games are good but Fromsoft developed ones were pretty shitty. Have to remember back then From was a hit and miss company. AC games were ace. So was Otogi. Cookies and Cream was good. Those PS2 RPGs..trash. Tenchu. Trash. Ninja Blade. Trash.

Yep. Figured it out after looking it up on YouTube. Not even a game I remember reading about in a magazine. It's a complete blank but I suppose there are probably great games releasing right now these past few years and that you and I could absolutely love and they may go unknown to us up til the day we die. I only recently learned of Metal Wolf Chaos from you on another thread and so saddened that I missed that one and it's one that's way to bombastic for remaster treatment.

Metal Wolf Chaos got a remaster on PS4/PC. Often on sale for 12 bucks.. I have the physical. Sekiro is in many ways a successor to Tenchu but also it's own thing. So not identical but a better successor than Shinobido series.

I consider Nier: Automata and action RPG so I won't include it on my list then.

1. Devil May Cry 1

The third game is definitely improved over the first in many gameplay aspects. But I go back and forth between which of them I prefer because the setting and sound design of the first game hits different.

2. Devil May Cry 3

3. Onimusha 3

4. Final Fight

5. Turtles in Time

DMC 1, 2 and 3 need remakes so badly, the HD remasters just aren't good enough.

1. Nier Automata
2. God of War Ragnarok
3. Bayonetta 2
4. Bayonetta
5. God of War (2018)

uhhh ill just include these
6. DMC 5
7. Astral Chain

8. Bayonetta 3

Edit: I wonder where I would put Ninja Gaiden 4 & Tides of Annihilation

Fingers crossed those two will get a spot and perhaps Phantom Blade 0 and Ghost of Yotei too (I think that counts). If 2025/2026 turns out the be the year my list in this particular genre gets replaced, I'll be a very happy man. 2024 already knocked one in with Stellar Blade so things are looking up, it's a great time for this to be your favourite genre.

In no particular order

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition

Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition

Bayonetta

Assassin's Creed 3

Beyond Good and Evil

Honorable mention: Eternal Darkness
