There has been many a Mario Kart, years to evolve but there has only ever been one Crash Team Racing. I just booted up the remake and was instantly flooded with a remembrance of how great this title is/was. Naughty Dog struck absolute Gold with this. All the countless hours as a kid weren't just the easily met tastes of a child, they were routed in the fact that the game is just so good.
The Powersliding and boost mechanics with the risk reward gameplay as well as shortcuts that have a knack to them and the track designs as well as hub map all add to make it a better game and all the little mechanics, track obstacles and not to mention so many different ways of boosting or getting speed plus it has a story.
I have to say, it's thee most frustrating Kart racer but that comes with adding actual depth, for me it beats all Mario Karts I've played.
Edit: Learned that there are more than one Crash Kart racers. I've not played or even heard of the ps2 games. Still doesn't void my point that CTR is a better game than any MK, mechanically and on many other levels. Since I posted this thread I have played two hours of MK8 to refresh my memory and a few hours of CTR and it's not even close. For some reason I want to play MK8 more, probably because it's easier and less frustrating but while playing CTR, it is by far the better game. Like Bloodborne adds simple mechanics to push the player to be aggressive over Dark Souls methodical play styles and becomes the far better game for it, CTR does the same here. Very simple and many mechanics to keep you going at speed and make every inch of the track interesting and engaging. Far better game. This isn't close.
