The genre is niche except Larian Studios for some reason.

Fire Emblem 3 Houses, sold 4 million+, watch out for Fortune Weaves this year

X Com 2 also sold over 4 million

Disco Elysium 5 million units

Tactical RPGs (as in, gameplay-wise) are not exactly niche per se, they simply lack production value that are marketable for non TTRPGs nerds. A full voice acted with complex character models Disco Elysium would have sold close to 10 million range. Im 99% sure the next Divinity will sell close to the 10 million range

I forgot Disco Elysium and Fire Emblem, i guess the genre isn't niche then.

XCom is tactical strategy not RPG.

BG3 has me. I can't play for long sessions but this is the most I've gotten into gaming since August. I don't feel particularly good about it but the game is just perfect for me right now, you can fire it up for a half hour and any progress you make feels satisfying. At this rate it will take me til summer to complete it but I feel the sessions getting longer as I play more. I just wish I could get into a game to complement it, alas, I've triedany and they aren't hitting. Would live to get a racing game going and I've a few installed like Car X Street and Wrekfest but they can't hold me for more than one race. I think I'll just focus on BG3 and hopefully this will get my momentum back. I've seen people put dozens of hours plus into Nioh 3 on my friends list, it's only been out ten days and I'm so jealous of that stanima, a bit concerned for one person though who is now at 120 hours, that's an insane time sink at 12 hours a day. I'd be immeasurably happier if I could get bavk to my three hours a day and feel like I amn't forcing myself to do it, I want to be on that dopamine thread mill.

Disco elysium proves it cause that game is just dialogue with no combat. Gamers want deep complex games that last a long time and that are difficult also, Elden Ring proved that without doubt but also Betheada before it with Skyrim and Fallout even though those are only surface level complex. I think BG3 might have won over a whole new generation too, younguns who don't remember the joy of these games in the 90's.

I think this subject is a bit absurd since i don't know any other developer except Larian Studios to have Tactical RPGs to sell Millions or tens of Millions.

Almost all games of that genre just sell some hundrends thousands of copies like Vandal Hearts on PS1 and Disgaea on PS2.

The genre is niche except Larian Studios for some reason.

Larian is not making tactical RPGs, they've made their name with isometric CRPGs, which, almost by default, have some degree of tactical combat.

They are not dead, they were always niche (if we're talking CRPGs, that usually have tactical combat). Even back in the heyday of CRPGs (pick your era, whether it's Ultima, SSI's Gold Box, or first renaissance spearheaded by Interplay/Bioware) they were mostly niche genre for audience that wanted P&P RPG experiences converted to video game format.

BG3 made a mainstream splash since it was riding the massive mainstream success of D&D 5e, it's (on the paper) sequel to CRPG classics that are BG1&2, it's made by makers of D:OS games (which have their loyal following), and last (but nowhere near least) had massive media hype (backed by Hasbro).

I think what made the difference was the actual acting and face to face interactions with the characters. It made it much more appealing to the mainstream than just tiny characters with text above their heads. I wonder how popular Larian's previous games would have been if they did that earlier.

Yeah - I kinda went over mentioning AAA budget, but yeah, that's certainly one of the major reasons for its mainstream success. Not that high production value in those departments make it better game (as a whole it's way more shallow than BG2, let alone Arcanum), but that's certainly what makes it more appealing to mass market.

I knew about Action RPGs, Turn based RPGs and tactical RPGs but first time i hear about CRPGS. what c means ?

If it means computer then that doesn't mean anything for gameplay since Witcher 1 and Neverwinter Nights were CRPGS and they were action RPGs.

Also Diablo 2 was isometric and it was action RPG , i think you use terms that have nothing to do with gameplay.

It took decades but I am finally in on emulation on PC. Tho to be fair I had gateway drugs. We can count the legal way with Wii shop and Xbox Live back in the day. To getting a Polymega which is a emulation console that takes my legit discs and dumps the rom to a SSD. Then got a modded Dreamcast with GDEMU. Now fully in on console emulation on PC. Right now messing with PCSX2 on Linux. I downloaded like a 150GB of PS2 games. I have a dozen or so loaded. Using a Dualshock 4. Everything has been running well. Of course I fired up Berserk PS2 and what a good game. Right now just trying things out.

C is exactly that, computer, as to distinguish them from Pen & Paper RPGs, which CRPGs were trying to emulate in video game form - though, if my memory serves me, we didn't call them that back in days, we just refereed to VG RPGs as FRP (fantasy role play) genre. Pen & Paper we just called by actual name (I've mostly played AD&D back then).

Isometric CRPGs are sort of a subgenre inside of it - Fallout 1 is often cited as progenitor, and although Fallout ('97) and Baldur's Gate ('98) are games that established feel and look of what second CRPG renaissance was (mostly) trying to recreate, you can go further in the past, to something like Darklands ('93) or Pool of Radiance ('88) and find isometric tactical combat in CRPGs.

For us that are much older, that were actually playing those games in 80s and 90s, there wasn't as clear cut distinction until first CRPG renaissance, which came with Interplay in late 90s - they developed and published (along with Bioware's titles) half a dozen titles that became sort of a blueprint for lot of things in second renaissance that started around 2013-14, and is still going fairly strong.

As I initially said, Larian made their current name mostly with D:OS 1/2, and then BG3, which are all Iso CRPGs.

Fun boss, but I was overgeared for it when I killed it. I let it kill me the first time, and then I slipped up the 2nd time, and beat it on 3rd try. Nioh 3 does have far more difficult bosses than Nioh 2 and Nioh though. I tilted on one the other day and it forced me to spend all of my prestige from the titles.
