Great numbers for Switch, even a bit better than I expected for the quarter. That said, I don't see Nintendo hitting its new target of 12.5m. I'm still predicting ~ 11.5m for the fiscal year.
Tears of the kingdom and Breath of the wild have both shipped 240k each in the last quarter.

Of course this plays a big role. PS3 was not running too well. But if a console maker really hits a milestone of 160 million units, its gonna be announced right after discontinuation and not 11 years later as a sidenote in a random podcast. Its like some Microsoft guy would type a fantasy number on his Xbox 360 and tell us 88.253.456- in memory of the last produced Xbox 360. Who would believe that? It would just be a poor move, a number wich has never even been produced just to make it seem like the competitior (next target in sales ranking) would be surpassed.- Like what happened with the PSP. I know it sounds like hate but is Sony where we do not know the final number of some systems. I smell like Sony could do the same with the PS4 wich was discontinued in 2022. Printing a fantasy number on it wich make it seem like it outsold the Gameboy. Or of course the Xbox 360 with a fantasy number because we do not have official numbers. Or Nintendo lumping together Game Boy and Game Boy Color just to make it seem it outsold the PSone wich it certenly didn't. The GB and the GBC are 2 different systems. Just for the books: I know this topic could lead to "WW3" but thats the way i see it.
Well if Nintendo hits their forecast for the FY they only need another ~5 mil after March to reach the PS2. Depends on how they want to transition to next gen, but if they keep shipping Switches while there's demand I think it's gonna happen because a Switch Lite will probably be half the price of the next system.

2024 OpenCritic Prediction Leagues:
A surprisingly strong Switch quarter and the new Zelda did very well. I don't know if Zelda helped slow the decline this quarter or what, but very good for Nintendo.
Still, probably going to be a weak final holiday quarter coming up. While Switch I would say is certainly undertracked here on vgchartz by probably a bit over a million, cuz I don't see any reason why there would be an entire quarter's worth of systems shipped but not sold, and despite the very good quarter, with the next gen launch likely 6 months away I see the Switch finishing up right around the DS final numbers. Unless Switch gets a price cut, it's gonna essentially stop selling except for a little bit of Lite sales once next gen starts. PS2 and certainly 160m are out of reach. But there is a decent possibility Switch could just barely pass DS numbers and become Nintendo's best selling system ever at 154.X million or maybe even 155m if these last ports and a couple new games like Pokemon and Metroid Prime can spruce sales a bit this last half year before the successor launches.

Well it certainly shouldn't be judged against Switch sales, although of course it is natural to do so. I think S2 will at least pass 100m, assuming we don't find out Nintendo is doing something funky/stupid once the system is revealed. I'll predict it'll be somewhere between Wii sales and GB sales.
Only way I see it doing much better than that range is if they do something really impressive or consumer friendly that makes people flock to the system. Like having another totally groundbreaking game that is a life-long system seller the way BotW was, or get really competitive on hardware and software pricing over it's lifecycle, or vastly improve services like greatly expand the friendliness of their online, or manage to finally pick up lots of AAA third party games that release alongside their console releases that make people question why but much more expensive consoles when they can by a Switch with the same level of third party games, or it comes with some main system feature that turns out to be super popular the way Wii introduced motion controls and Switch introduced hybrid play-anywhere gaming.

It really depends how this quater goes. But i personally do not see less than 155 million LTD. If they horribly fail to meet their FC we would be looking at ~150,3 million by march 25. (9 million). For 2025 i see no less than 4 million putting the Switch barly over the DS' 154,02 million. And i do not see the Switch under 1 million for 2026/27. Discontinuation no earlier than march 2027.

The thing is they make more of them, than they sell.
So even when its discontinued, they have a stockpile just laying around, incase of need of repairs and trade in and such.
Overtime (many years lateron) they are still selling from these stock piles, and pitiful small numbers (since there is newer tech out there).
So by the time, they stopped production, it might not have sold through 160m yet.
Flash forwards 10years time, and the last million or so, they had stockpiled, have just barely sold enough to push it over 160m.
At that point, who cares? They mention it in some random podcast or interview, and we have a quote of it.
What comes of that? We get people like you going "I don't believe it, doesn't make sense".

I don't think they do that sort of stuff.
Man the Switch selling 2.62 Million this quarter was way more than I expected. I expected the Switch to actually fall just short of 2 Million this quarter but the Switch sales barely dropped compared to last year only 10%. It's absolutely mind-blowing that the Switch is still selling this well in it's 8th year and not showing any signs of major saturation. It's now at 146 Million instead of the 145 Million expected with no signs of slowing down.
While I was already almost sure the Switch would surpass the DS in sales before this, this quarter being much higher than expected pretty much 100% confirms for me that the Switch will outsell the DS. Zero chance it somehow falls short of the DS. Outselling PS2's 159 Million is increasingly more likely than not as well.
