While the draw distance increase in CyubeVR is very noticeable and great to have, in Spiderman 2, even up close I can hardly tell the difference between performance pro and fidelity pro mode. It's supposed to vastly ramp up RT effects, but most of what I see is a terrible drop in fps with drops well below 30 fps when turning the camera.

You can set effects lower and VRR would certainly help (and recommended) for fidelity mode. This is comparison with everything on max.
Performance Pro mode first, Fidelity Pro (more RT) next.

I can see the difference in the first pictures when switching back and forth, the reflections are sharper / higher detail. Yet in motion the severe drop in frame rate negates it all.

Performance Pro

Fidelity Pro

Performance Pro mode runs flawlessly and looks amazing. The extra sharpness in RT reflections adds too little to kill the frame rate for.

What I find irritating in this whole "is it better" discussion is the simple fact that any software has to be recompiled to make best use of the hardware improvements on the PS5 Pro. Any and all games out for the PS5 were compiled with a compiler which has no idea of simd2 instructions, for example (as the PS5 does not support it).
It's not simply "a patch". It's a complete recompile of the code (gpu code, obviously) until we see the best progress on the PS5 Pro. if the compiler still cannot make use of dual issues features, we will still see mainly cosmetic improvements, essentially.

Dunno if it makes full use the pro, but it sure is great to play Burning Shores at 60 fps in what previously was fidelity mode.

From the couch it looks flawless.

And that's what the pro mostly will be good for. Play more games at 60fps without (noticeable) compromises.

I tried being closer to the TV but the fov in the game doesn't change with your fov on the screen. It works on PC since you can set the fov higher. Same for playing flat games on PSVR2, either I shrink the screen making it pointless, or have to deal with a warped fov.

Some games do let you change the though, then you can sit closer. I think Tlou2 has an fov slider, yep under accessibility settings. So I'll be replaying that closer to the TV. In Horizon FW it just felt wrong. Half of the time I already can't see what's going on in combat since it zooms in all the time.

Adapting the rendered FOV shouldn't be necessary just for sitting closer to a TV with 16:9 aspect ratio. The FOV-angle of the display is still much smaller than the simulated/rendered angle of the game.

An especially people who play a lot of VR games with ~100° FOV should easily adept to 40°-50° instead of 20°-30°

In my experience, it is not.

3.3ft / 1 meter away from my 65" TV, which gives a 71 degree fov, which should match what console games typically render at, is very uncomfortable to me.

I'm not talking about 20-30-40, that's fine. Above 40 it gets uncomfortable. 6.5 ft / 2 meters (40 fov) is about as close as comfortable.
Normally I sit about 9ft away, 30 degree fov.

For comparison on a 4K screen (20/20 vision is 60 pixels per degree, humans can see benefits up to 90 pixels per degree)
70 fov gives you 55 ppd, 46 ppd (1800p), 40 ppd (1600p), 37 ppd (1440p), 27 ppd (1080p)
60 fov gives you 64 ppd, 53 ppd (1800p), 47 ppd (1600p), 43 ppd (1440p), 32 ppd (1080p)
50 fov gives you 77 ppd, 64 ppd (1800p), 57 ppd (1600p), 51 ppd (1440p), 38 ppd (1080p)
40 fov gives you 96 ppd, 80 ppd (1800p), 71 ppd (1600p), 64 ppd (1440p), 48 ppd (1080p)
30 fov gives you 128 ppd, 107 ppd (1800p), 94 ppd (1600p), 85 ppd (1440p), 64 ppd (1080p)

Yeah from 9ft away 1440p looks the same as 4K (of course also depends on the anti aliasing and upscaling solution used)
Native 4K is overkill, but still helps with anti aliasing problems.

Anyway it's not comparable to VR since you're not looking at a square screen, it's all around you in the proper dimensions. Using the virtual screen in VR is just as uncomfortable to me as sitting closer than 2 meters to the TV.

But you're probably correct that adjusting the fov won't help. It is more comfortable though to play at a bit higher rendered fov. 70-80 is fine, but some games tend to zoom in a lot :/

I tried Horizon FW in Performance pro mode.

Locked 60 fps, very smooth, flawless picture, no shimmering anywhere. Night and day difference with the release version that gave me migraines. I started the Burning Shores DLC after an hour trying to get along with the controls again. It's so hard getting back into a game with 1000 options. I set it to story mode, can't be bothered to relearn all the systems again. Hack and slash works fine at 60fps!

Burning shores looks amazing. Now I truly think it can't get much better. One day this level of detail will be in VR!
(The contrast with a screenshot of Metro Awakening is shocking)

Not sure how to get screenshots of the pro now, no USB port on the front, can't really go fishing with a USB stick behind the pro... Guess I need to buy USB-C sticks. Tried via PSApp in Bluestacks but no longer compatible and the update isn't working (so slow) Yay progress :/

I played the Burning Shores DLC some days ago (on a base PS5) and had no problem at all coming back to it.

It also looks gorgeus on the PS5.

I did enjoy Frozen Wilds quite a bit more than it, tho.

I never played Frozen Wilds. I see it is included in the remaster as well as PS5 Pro enhancements. I guess I'll be double dipping!

I always have trouble getting back into games. Last night I couldn't remember how to swing or run in Spiderman 2 (R2) was pressing X.
In Horizon I forgot there's a difference between clicking R3 and longer press of R3 (which activates the analyze mode)

Yeah, you can forget stuff but after a little trying ouy you can get the hang of it pretty quick.

It happened to me with Nioh, platined it days after launch, then years later I got the DLCs and I just couldn't remember how to play it properly for the life of me, I put it down and never got back to it, lol. probably not a good choice to restart in a hard late game area in such a difficult game, tho.

I'll never be able to take DF seriously again after finding out what screens they use for their analysis, these insanely high end PC monitors up real close to the screen. I suppose that makes their job doable but it does not reflect my experience and we have gotten to the point where at distance it really doesn't matter for such small changes. I'll check in for FPS but that's about it.

They are a source really for a really niche, nerdy audience.

It's coming back, but was genuinely stuck in FW not being able to remember how to activate focus mode (hold R3) and thus not able to track tracks to advance the quest. Now I see in HZD any R3 click activates focus mode and you can't 'ping' the terrain as in FW.

Apparently I had the complete digital edition of HZD PS4 version (was it on ps+ some time?) so I downloaded that and did the $10 upgrade to the PS5 remastered version which indeed includes the DLC :) Took a while to figure out how to activate / get to the Frozen wilds lol.

Despite the pro enhanced remaster, HZD still feels a step back in time. Different lighting, I guess no physically based rendering. And character models also look more like plastic. But it runs smooth, razor sharp visuals.

Before I could get into it proper I got sidetracked trying my old Minecraft world on the PS5 version of Minecraft (free upgrade). Err bummer. While the conversion is better now (no big holes in the world) red stone logic is still different, braking all my doors and secret passages. It only activates the one piston now instead of a stack of 2. In the Java version if you charge the top block the block beneath also gets charged, thus activating 2 pistons. Same with pistons side by side, also the one to the left gets activated, but no longer. So my moving ledges have gaps, secret doors all reveal themselves with a 1 block gap :/

Some other logic must be short circuiting as one of my big doors in the water ride adventure turned into a chomping monster instead of opening to let you through. And since the mine carts move slower, the timing is all off and doors that open to let you through close again before you get there, splat... Plus all my signs have no text in the new version. I have multiple hubs around my world where you press a button which re-arranges the tracks to send you there. New edition, no text, guess work, which of the 6 buttons sends me back to the castle... Pretty disappointing to see everything only half working.

Thus back to the PS4 version which still lets you play the old edition (that also supports PSVR1) and loads 10x faster than the new version. (Plus I can find all the materials again, hate the new layout) Draw distance seems to be a little less but otherwise it looks better?! What did they do to Minecraft ugh. At least the Java PS4 version runs perfectly fine on PS5, no slowdown, no visible pop in from chunks loading. Only disadvantage is the fly speed is slower. (New edition, you fly faster than mine carts move, old edition mine carts move faster than you can fly!)

I could use no clip mode on ps5, can't find the mine I was working on last lol. The world is too big and I don't remember all the underground mazes anymore. (World last updated 2016)

Back to Burning shores, or Frozen wilds. Frozen wilds first! Then I can enjoy the QoL improvements of FW later again.
