Which do you think was the better system?

Xbox 26 46.43%

Dreamcast 30 53.57%

Total:56

The Xbox was a beast at its time. It had a friggin' hard drive built in in a time where you still had to get insanely expensive memory cards for PS2 and Gamecube. It also got some great PC ports like Morrowind. That was the first time I played an Elder Scrolls game. The graphics might seem laughable today. But back then nothing could touch the Xbox. Gamecube and PS2 looked like toys in comparison, even though PS2 and Gamecube still had far more exclusives.

I would pick Gamecube and PS2 over Xbox any day of the week. But when it comes to Xbox or Dreamcast, Segas offering doesn't stand a chance. The Dreamcast was ok, I guess. I had a blast playing Shenmue and Soul Calibur was also great. But those games came to Xbox eventually, if I remember correctly.

Shenmue 1 was not on Xbox nor was Soul Calibur 1. Xbox got the sequels. Soul Calibur II had an exclusive character per console. Gamecube got Link. Xbox got Spawn. PS2 got Heihachi.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Xbox.

I owned a Dreamcast for about a year, had well over 25 games on it and it died twice on me (kept restarting and infuriating my Shenmue hungry self). Sold it alongside my PS1 to get the backwards compatible PS2.

Dreamcast's game library was quite good for a system that didn't last long, but Xbox had longer and ultimately better support.

Indeed, there was only a movie of the first game, I just googled it. But anyway, the sequels are still good enough for me to pick Xbox over Dreamcast.

Xbox. Halo CE. Ninja Gaiden black, Fable, Project Gotham racing and eventually Forza. Halo CE and Ninja Gaiden Black makes it the winner for me, alone.
Have you done a PS2 vs Gamecubes thread? Would be cool to put the two winners up against eachother although we all know who's going to win.

Xbox.

Sega is the most grossly overrated company in gaming. Sega was a one hit wonder with the genesis.

Then Xbox is a one-hit wonder with 360 and was in 3rd place. SEGA invented the 3D fighting game genre. Without it, Tekken doesn't exist. Seiichi Ishii worked on VF1 then went to Namco to direct Tekken 1-2. Panzer Dragoon. A genre that many games copied. It's the same with Space Harrier. Even Nintendo copied Space Harrier publishing Sin n Punishment. (tho the Wii game is best in the genre) Gears 2 has a Panzer Dragoon section. As did Darksiders. Clones. REZ. Edge of Skyhigh. EX Zeus. Burning Force. 3D World Runner. Panarama Cotton and more. Crash exists because of Sonic as well. The entire inspiration for the game was "Sonics ass" as Ruben put it.   Xbox never invented a genre. Tho I give credit for popularizing the TPS and without Gears probably no VanQuish. SEGA had almost as many hardware innovations as Nintendo during that time. Just Nintendo was better at selling the idea and presenting an entire game/console around it as a general rule.

The only successful console was indeed Genesis/MD in the West but it wasn't a success in Japan. Saturn was. XBO sold 58 million. Great if it was the 90s. Poor of the modern era. XSX is barely above OG Xbox sales. It's weird how that works. OG Xbox is awesome no doubt. Tho Xbox is far more overrated. They bought their successful IPs aside from Flight Sim. and then drove them into the ground. Halo was in development for Apple Macs and a DC port was considered before MS bought Bungie.

Don't get me wrong, I think sega was amazing at software.  I just think those days are long gone.  Sega hasn't been a big player in decades.  Some good stuff here and there, but nothing shattering.

The fact that shining force and skies are dead franchises is a shame.  Meanwhile Halo and Forza still love on.

I'd say...

Xbox > Dreamcast.

Legacy: Sega >>> Microsoft.

Current: Microsoft >>> Sega, but I'm still more into Sega's software (counting Atlus). I need to move my ass and start Valkyria Chronicles! Are VC2 and 3 ever getting remastered?

Fair.  I agree with this.

This thread made me remember a snowboarding game for Dreamcast that I really enjoyed the multiplayer on called Snow Surfers.
In one of the multiplayer modes you play split screen but as you gather trick points the opponents allocated part of the screen gets smaller making it more and more difficult to see where one is going.
Another game I spent a lot of time in is Chu-Chu Rocket. One could design own puzzles and some of the ones I created I revisit and find very difficult to crack.

I never owned an Xbox but a few of my friends got it. But most of my memories from the Xbox has to do with one of the cables starting to smoke and one time actually set fire to one on my friends systems. I thought that was hilarious at the time, made jokes as to why anyone would buy a lighter one one could simply buy an Xbox and constant suggestions to go to my friends house and barbeque marshmallows. They recalled the old version of the cable if I remember correctly.

Dreamcast takes it all the way. I would encourage people to read Dreamcastjunkyard's top 200 DC games article. The system is overflowing with unique and amazing games.

Xbox was great for its own exclusive games for sure, but DC just had more and better exclusives that were made specifically for it.

Dreamcast and Genesis games are still being made to this day. OG Xbox on the other hand is basically a dead system.
