Forums - Movies & TV - Best disaster flicks.

2012 was...

A good film 3 16.67%

A bad film 4 22.22%

A mediocre film 7 38.89%

So bad it was good. 4 22.22%

Total:18

God I love a good disaster flick, it has the adverse effect in me of what is intended, I feel warm, cosy and comfortable in waves after the tnesion crescendos, mostly that I'm not experiencing what's happening on screen. Plus it's cool to see shit blow up.

My top five.

1. Contagion

2. Deep Impact

3. Sunshine

4. Godzilla Minus one

5. 2012 (it's so bad, it's good)

Bonus: The core. The knowing. The Day After. The Room.

I had more fun with Armageddon than Deep Impact in terms of the bigger disaster flick of 1998 lol.

But my personal favorites would be The Day After Tomorrow, Twister, The Perfect Storm, and Independence Day (if that counts)

Ah the age old debate. I'll give Armegedon one thing, like you said it's indeed more fun but it can't compete with Deep Impact in the tension and vibes department.

Independence day counts, like every major city gets destroyed lol. Great film.

Does 28 Days Later count? If so, that's easily my number 1. After that, Sunshine.

It's certainly a disaster film. Ya, I'd count Zombie films as long as it's a disease causing the zombification and not something supernatural. That being said, Shaun of the dead counts too.

In that case, Zombieland is definitely up there for me! love Shaun of the Dead though too!

Oh man, I'm rethinking my list now. That film is incredible and one of the rare cases a sequel is as good as the original in modern cinema. 👏 Fantastic pick.

I agree with A Perfect Storm and Armageddon, two of my favs.

Here's a few more fiction ones: Outbreak (1995), War of the Worlds (2005), and I Am Legend (2007).

But it's these non-fiction ones that really pack a punch: United 93 and Deepwater Horizon.

I haven't watched many, but Independence Day would be my favorite.

The non fiction ones are amazing.

My favorites are Chernobyl (2019 mini series), The Railway Men - The Untold Story Of Bhopal 1984 and Thai Cave Rescue (2022)

Mayday series is always a guilty pleasure. Interesting to see what all can go wrong, and happy not to be on board! It's always spoiled by who starts to tell the story, survivor or family member. Bit of a giveaway lol.
