Forums - Sales - Wii is a HUGE software seller!

I can't say that I am really familiar with the entire library of the PSP, but you have a point there that it has better support from Japanese 3rd parties than from Western 3rd parties, so it's really more of a handheld thing. Most of the Western games are/were simply ports of PS2 games while Japanese publishers made many new games based on their popular IPs. Btw, God of War is irrelevant to this discussion because it's a Sony game.

But I stand by my point that Japanese publishers were backing the Wii better so far and still are for the rest of this year at least. Games already out like RE4, RE:UC, Okami, Zack & Wiki from Capcom or the not everyone's cup of tea and not that great, but decent Sega games Super Monkey Ball, Sonic, NiGHTS along with Atlus' two Trauma Center games and Grasshoppers' No More Heroes, that's actually not that bad of a lineup. Upcoming games like Capcom's We Love Golf, Namco's Tales of Symphonia 2 and Fragile, Sega's Sonic Unleashed and some other stuff I don't remember look promising.

In terms of exclusives games build for the Wii, Japanese publishers are definitely ahead of Western publishers. Then again, that's not too much of a surprise since EA and Ubisoft are known for making most of their games multiplatform. But a Wii exclusive game has better chances of turning out good than a port. So yeah, I put my money on Japanese publishers to make more good Wii games than Western publishers in the foreseeable future.

I was thrown off by the fact that God of War on the PSP was developed by Ready at Dawn: I'd completely forgotten that Sony was the publisher. My bad. As for the rest, you definitely have a point. I still think you're being a little too harsh on the Western developers, but you certainly have good reasons to support your position. Personally, I'm looking forward to about an equal mix of Western and Eastern games, which may be why my perceptions are skewed, but to each his onw. And I have to agree that Capcom's stepped up quite nicely: they've given us four great games so far, and We Love Golf is supposed to be equally awesome.

In any case, thanks for being a good sport and engaging me in this discussion. I need to get to ready for bed now, but I enjoyed our conversation. Take care, and see you later.

I think the big question is (for me): when will we see a 3rd party have the kind of breakout succuess, in terms of the uber-numbers for more "typical" gamer fare from 3rd parties?

The DS has had those sorts of titles for awhile now - your Prof. Laytons, Cooking Mama, and the like. But the Wii, thus far, just has Carnival Games (a spinoff of Wii Sports/Play), and Guitar Hero 3. Outside of that, it's been budget succuess, or games that seem to be overtracked by VGC.

Time will tell. But for 3rd party developers, seeing the top 10 or 20 being almost entirely dominated by Nintendo, while big 3rd party games are much lower on the list...Is not a good thing.

I think that's incorrect, honestly. Sorry to go against you here, but I think you have a perception of the situation but not the reality. Breakout success' like Resident Evil 4, or Umbrella Chrons are rarely mentioned. Here's what Iwata said in his inteview with Gamespot.

Iwata - I'll also mention that according to last December's top 100 games data from the NPD Group, Wii titles are outselling Xbox 360 titles, and only five of the 20 Wii titles on the list were created by Nintendo, with the remaining 15 from third-party developers. But even with those numbers there, that isn't the impression you get. It feels like it takes a bit of time for popular perception to catch up to the actual sales figures.

I do, however, feel that the 3rd party situation, much like the "Wii doesn't sell games" myth is much too often used as fanboy ammo to discredit and marginalize the console as well as to cast doubt towards its future. Not that your a fanboy, but fanboys would certainly get behind your post to further their biased arguments, so that is why I must respond to it.

I think it's a fair assumption at this point to assume that the Wii could possibly win this generation if nary a new game was released for the system. If your talking strictly for the folks, sure we'd like to see some 3rd party games, playable in the library, but remember this, the PS3's "big games" aren't out yet. Every PS3 fan on this site talks about MGS or FF, so why can't Wii gamers use games like Tales of Symphonia 2, Fragile, or Deadly Creatures when describing their library as well?

You know as well as I that Wii 3rd party support has vastly improved lately, and some companies are taking chances with games on the system. Call of Duty V, Guitar Hero IV, Rock Band, New Sonic game, Ghostbusters, all of these games are being ported to the Wii because of it's sales success. 3rd party games from Capcom, Suda, and virtually every good game has enjoyed better than expected sales on the Wii, particularly Guitar Hero, and yes even NMH, Okami, PES, and Zack and Wiki, which sold better than expected due to word of mouth.

I feel you're painting with broad strokes here.

How many of them are third party?

Does it really matter if it's third party or not?

yes, because you will always never get good 3rd party titles.
