Most difficult to master...

Rythym games 4 12.50%

FPS shooters 2 6.25%

Bullet Hell 7 21.88%

Soulsborne/action 2 6.25%

Racing sim 2 6.25%

Platformers 1 3.13%

Fighting games 6 18.75%

RTS games 8 25.00%

Total:32

What's the most difficult genre to become really good at across all games. Good enough to pick up and play a new game in the genre and be instantly good at it?

I thought I was proficient at soulsborne games, just best Lies of P with no summons apart from one boss that needed the summons mechanically and that was tough but I got through it. Then I started playing Nioh 2 again after quitting at release, it's next level for the genre, I feel if I can master this I've finally mastered the souls genre in all it's forms as it has everything difficult about them at a much faster pace than the usual and it got me thinking.

But the answer to the thread topic is bullet hell games with really high difficulty sliders, they are so difficult to master game by game. Nex Machina on the highest difficulty takes some serious skill you won't get by playing that game alone.

A second would be rhythm based games. From thumper to beat saber to guitar hero it takes thousands of hours to master the genre at a high level.

Thirdly I'd say FPS shooters. I don't believe in them anymore cuase of lag stability implentation and all the unfair fuckery that goes into match making but LAN based FPS games have a very high ceiling of skill. The 10,000 hours to master rule wouldn't even cut it. Plus you need to have mastered them before a certain age as your reflexes weign as you get older.

I think this is a very subjective question, and will vary a lot from person to person.

For me it's FPS on consoles, they give me motion sickness and overall analog stick is simply not accurate enough to give a full control of the bullets. They are better on PCs where you can control the mouse

Platformers can be insane when devs want to make things hard. You need good and fast reflexes and sometimes press an obnoxious combination of buttons in exactly the right moment to not die. Play some Mario Maker and you will understand

That's what the thread and poll is for 😉. I wanna know what others find challenging. I know people who can't play souls at all but are excellent at fighting games which I can't even muster a good combo.

I know the FPS ceiling is very high but it has also a lot of extremely popular games.

I'd say FGs, at least back in the late '90s and early '00s, some of the things there were just insane (frame-perfect combos and parries, etc.)

Fighting games :D

And FGC = fighting game community. Often used terms.

Oh right, yep. The skill ceiling there is nearly infinite.

Thing with fighting games and why I'd say it's that is to me, especially some modern ones, much of the perfect combos are sequence button inputs perfectly timed, sometimes frame perfect and executed in the form of a rhythm game but you have to also out maneuver, block and counter an enemy at the same time.

Hmm, pie.

For me it is RPG games or games that run off statistics. It is always just beyond me anyways, so it makes it hard to figure out, even if I play a lot. I get what moves are better after a while, but could not tell you the exact stat as to why.
