Alien Romulus is all that I'd watch.

Good picks.

I'm a fairly big fan of the Alien franchise as well... although I still hold a grudge against Alien 3 for undermining Aliens. One of the very very rare sequel grudges I actually have.

But while the fourth film wasn't a cinematic masterpiece, I found it to be loads of fun. The cast was spectacular, and it had a lot of little nods to the first two films, including camera work and shots.

While Prometheus has some ridiculous stuff in it, I found the film overall to be quite enjoyable as well.

I like Alien Resurrection, and can't get why people don't like it.  AR is the funnest Alien movie out there, and had plenty of action.  I liked the prequels as well with Covenant and Prometheus.  But they were different, seemed like these sci-fi movies that had that vast backdrop that wanted you to open your mind up to a bunch of weird stuff that the universe had that we don't know about.  And this newest one looks cool, more like the original Alien with the horror emphasis.  Yes, i think it will be delightfully bloody.  Mabey i'll see a facehugger pulling a severed head or something tacky like that.

Very much agree with this. Resurrection is loads of fun.
And IMO, the film is as fun as the cast that's in it suggests it is:

  • Sigourney Weaver - No intro needed... But Grace in Avatar, Dana in Ghostbusters.
  • Winona Ryder - the original Lydia in Beetlejuice, Mina from Dracula, Veronica from Heathers (which I just watched recently).
  • Raymond Cruz - Tuco Salamanca from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
  • Brad Dourif - Chucky from the Child's Play series, Gríma Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings, the psychopathic Betazoid secondary character in the early seasons of Voyager.
  • Michael Wincott - Top Dollar in The Crow, Guy von Gisborne from Prince of Thieves, and most recently the photographer from Nope.
  • Ron Perlman Hellboy, the Beast in that TV show from the 80s my mother used to watch, he's Ron Perlman!
  • J. E. Freeman - Eddie in Miller’s Crossing
  • Dan Hedaya  - Cher's father in Clueless.
  • Dominique Pinon Joseph in Amelie.

And speaking of Amelie, same director. Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

I think the people that dislike Resurrection do so because it's the fourth film. There's a tendency for distaste toward sequels unless they exceed the original (as is the case with the James Bond series, Evil Dead 2,), are highly successful (Mission Impossible, Avatar 2, and the recent Disney catalogue), or are near-masterpieces or better (T2, Godfather 2, and Aliens). So, if it's a good film but falls behind its predecessors, instead of recognizing it as such, many have a tendency to go binary and label it as terrible - and most people tend not to like to say they like films or TV shows that so many say are bad. We're humans, we have social flaws like that.

That's why, IMO, the first step to developing a good taste is (paradoxically) to embrace what others deem as bad taste... the benefit is that it makes entertainment a lot more entertaining. But the rationality is that it trains the brain to consider what your own tastes are rather than deferring to the crowd your ear is on.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Actually, despite it's reviews, a lot of people seem to be watching it tonight. I manage a Dollar tree next to a theater and everyone buys their candy here. Keep hearing all day today people are going to see it. Will have to keep an eye on it's drop percentage after the weekend.

So, do we have any opinions from those who watched Borderlands or Alien: Romulus, this weekend?

Another Alien fan here who really liked Resurrection and didn't like Alien 3 because of how it undermined the second film (and also had a really dull setting). I'd even rank Prometheus and Covenant over Alien 3.

I didn't like the trailer for Romulus at all (Alien vs a group of Gen Zers - ergh), but it's got the best reception so far of any film in the series since Aliens so I'll give it a shot.

Alien Resurrection might be the most fun I had watching an Alien movie, but like, eating popcorn and having a good time laughing at all the ridiculous directions the movie takes (like Ripley being revived after 200 years and playing basketball on some space station, or the alien becoming more humanlike and having like a relationship with her? Wtf??) is not exactly the kind of experience I'm looking for with an Alien film. It was so bad it's good. Alien and Aliens were so good it's good.

Alien 3 (Assembly Cut, never watched the theatrical) is a pretty decent movie on its own imo, but yeah the way it treats its predecessor stings. Honestly I like to think of Alien 3 and Resurrection as non-canon tbh.

Prometheus is a good movie but I'm not sure I like it as part of the Alien franchise, and Covenant was just... well, I actually liked it the first time, but when I rewatched it my opinion of it plummeted. That movie is so stupid honestly.

Anyway yeah, looking forward to Romulus, will probably check it out this next week.

I have skipped most of the movies since Alien 3. Wasn't Wynona Ryder on Resurrection or something?

This weekend we ran to a local theater to see Trap. We really enjoyed it. I smiled more for Trap than Deadpool 3. Not that DP3 was bad, just I personally had a better time with Trap. M.Knight endings are always hot or miss and this one at least was not a miss. Wasn't the best ending, but was decent. Also the premise was a little over the top, hard to believe, but I suspended the disbelief and just enjoyed it.

IMO the best M. Knight movies are Sixth Sense and Signs, and having not seen Trap.

Oh for sure, I did not know the secret ending of Sixth sense back in the day and signs, well that was just good even without any twist ending.
