Yeah given the Zelda team's track record, I'm more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. If anyone can make this kind of more indirect gameplay engaging, it's them.

We do actually see Zelda taking a big fuck-off cannon to a bunch of baddies in the trailer, so she's still definitely going to get to kick arse. She just doesn't need a sword to do so.

Not that Zelda with a sword wasn't cool in games like the two Hyrule Warriors, but in this case I feel like her playing very differently to Link makes the game a lot more interesting.

For the most part, no, I don't think she needs to do it with a sword. That said, she is a Cleric of a sort, and it would be nice to have at least some basic weapon (let's say, that staff itself), instead of completely relying on "magic" (cause that's what Echoes translate to, more or less, conjuration magic).

Perhaps she does; we still don't have the complete details of the game's mechanics yet.

It looks meh to me. The art style is not impressive and the gameplay looks horrendous. Putting a bunch of beds together in the middle of the wilderness to overcome an obstacle/puzzle is laughably stupid. lol! This shit is weird. After the great BotW the LoZ series seems to be going downhill again. Sad

I mean, Zelda has always had a certain deliberate silliness to it.

In many of the series, your mighty hero could get killed by vengeful chickens. Groose in Skyward Sword was a source of much ridiculousness. In BOTW, the Korok seed questline is one long poop joke.

A certain absurdity has been part of the franchise's DNA since foever.

Let's hope so - but then again, this is Aonuma.

In my alternative history, Aonuma never happened, and Tezuka kept on directing Zeldas, instead of rising to supervisor/producer positions on Nintendo's corporate ladder.

I wonder if Grezzo is the developer of this, after Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask ports, assisting on Triforce Heroes and Link’s Awakening remake I think they have earned a shot at making an original Zelda title.

Yeah it's a safe bet this is a Grezzo/EPD co-production with Grezzo handling the grunt work and EPD handling the design/gameplay side of things.

I enjoyed the former's work on Link's Awakening so it's cool that they're getting to make their own original entry, even if I expect Aonuma and his team are still largely behind the concepts and mechanics of it.

2D means golden age Zelda too me. SO really excited for this release!

I don't know why, but that art style didn't bother me in Link's Awakening - here, I just can't shake off the feeling of "cheap".

I am playing through Tunic now. It is a really good “Zelda like” game.

I really like Tunic's art style, but the whole "unreadable in game language" gimmick and the focus on being overly cryptic is a turnoff for me personally.
I didn't grow up in that era of games being obtuse so its a throwback to something I have no attachment to.
Echoes of Wisdom I hope is a more frictionless experience with more modern QoL and convenience.

Tunic was awesome. Reminded me of the original zelda on the nes.

The game's ESRB rating reveals that Link will also be playable, at least at some point:

Maybe you play as Zelda in the overworld and Link in the "dark world" that he gets sucked into in the trailer?

I think people are interpreting this the wrong way. During the direct they said pretty much the same thing, pointing out they didn't just want Zelda to become a female version of Link. The paragraph even starts by stating that we assume the role of Zelda. They are making a comparison to other Zelda games, not confirming Link is playable.

edit: formatting was a bit screwed.
