While we assume GTA VI will do bonkers next year, will it really make a big impact in Japan?

Comparing Switch 2024 to 2018:

2024 has come out ahead for the last few weeks making Switch 2024 incredibly close to Switch 2018.

GTAV sold 1.81M in Japan as of August 2023. Salnax made a post of most sold Western games in Japan back in Nov 4 2020. GTA V was #6 on that list.

"Breakdown

  • PS3: 880,877 retail + 2,519 digital
  • PS4: 774,453 retail + 115,749 digital
  • PS5: 1,551 retail
  • X360: 33,894 retail"

So I expect GTA VI to sell near 2M in Japan for its lifetime.

2M is huge for a Western game, but compared to what Nintendo brings to the table nowadays it is child's play.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 160 million (was 120 million, then 140 million, then 150 million)

PS5: 130 million (was 124 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 54 million (was 60 million, then 57 million)

Considering the number of peeps who had to double down on the game due to it's close next gen re-release. I doubt about such good results

The damn Switch just won't quit; it's heading into its 8th year and there hasn't been a major release in months, yet just keeps going and going like the energizer bunny.

I think if the PS6 and the next Xbox come out, GTAVI will release in those platforms and follow GTAV’s path to get to 2 million. Though it kinda depends considering that PS5 is dragging a bit behind PS4’s pace in Japan (or I’m probably wrong there).

Next week should be interesting. Would be kinda funny if, despite Rebirth’s acclaim and hype around the world, Rebirth does well in its debut but repeats what XVI did and NOT push PS5 consoles for the weeks of its time in the charts. I’m not predicting that, but it would reflect a different time compared to when the original VII came out and completely made the N64 irrelevant in Japan and skyrocket the PS1 into the dominating position it ended up keeping.
