Israeli army says projectile launched from Gaza

The military says a projectile launched from northern Gaza towards Israel fell in an open area. An army update said sirens were activated during the incident and there have been no reports of casualties.

What remains of Gaza City?

Israel is demolishing Gaza City’s high-rise towers, flattening entire blocks that once housed thousands of people.

The Palestinian Civil Defence said at least 50 multistorey buildings have been destroyed in recent weeks as Israeli forces press their assault on the city, all amid a wave of forced displacements.

Some neighbourhoods have faced near-total destruction. In Gaza City’s Zeitoun area alone, more than 1,500 homes and buildings have been destroyed since early August, leaving parts of the district with no buildings standing.

Visit this interactive for images that show how neighbourhoods across Gaza’s largest city have been levelled in recent months.

Seven wounded by Israeli fire near aid centres in southern Gaza

At least seven Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli fire near aid distribution centres in southern Gaza, Gaza’s ambulance and emergency officials report.

Our colleagues on the ground also report that Israeli artillery shelling and heavy tank and helicopter fire are taking place in Khan Younis.

Child killed by Israeli bombing in Khan Younis

A child has been killed and many Palestinians wounded in an Israeli attack in Khan Younis, al-Amal Hospital officials report.

3 women killed as Gaza death toll rises from Israeli strikes

The situation is escalating as Israeli forces continue their destruction across the Gaza Strip. There has been at least five air strikes in one neighbourhood, where at least three women have been killed.

A boy was shot in the head in eastern Gaza. There were also at least six Palestinians killed in separate attacks across Khan Younis in the south.

This shows despite everything going on in the negotiations over the US-proposed ceasefire deal, Palestinians are still being killed throughout the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military’s explosive robots continue destroying residential neighbourhoods, where Palestinians know even if this war is brought to an end they won’t find anything to go back to.

Israel couldn’t wage wars on Gaza, Lebanon, Iran without US support: Reports

Israel would not have been able to sustain its wars across the Middle East without the US’s significant financial backing of more than $21bn since October 2023, according to new reports.

The reports by the Costs of War Project at Brown University found that without US weapons and money, Israel wouldn’t have been able to sustain its genocidal war on Gaza, start a war with Iran or repeatedly bomb Yemen.

“US support for Israel at all levels is indispensable to the prosecution of Israel’s war both in Gaza and across the region,” Omar H Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, told Al Jazeera.

‘A just and lasting peace’: Guterres urges action on Gaza war’s second anniversary

Two years since the Gaza war began, UN chief Antonio Guterres says the world must act “with even greater urgency” to end the hostilities.

“Two years ago today, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched an abhorrent large-scale terror attack on Israel,” he said. “On this day, let us remember all those who were killed and suffered horrific violence.”

He said captives remain “in deplorable conditions” in Gaza and repeated his call to “release them unconditionally and immediately”.

Guterres said Trump’s ceasefire proposal “must be seized” to bring the conflict to an end, calling for a “permanent ceasefire and a credible political process” to pave the way for peace.

“On this solemn anniversary, let us honour the memory of all victims by working for the only path forward: a just and lasting peace in which Israelis, Palestinians and all peoples of the region live side by side in security, dignity and mutual respect.”

Still won't call it a genocide. Captives also remain in deplorable conditions in Israeli torture jails in the thousands.

Western leaders urge release of captives, welcome plan to end war

Western leaders have called for the release of the captives held in Gaza and a ceasefire on the second anniversary of the start of the war.

  • British Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed to continue “working with our international partners until all the hostages are home and there is lasting peace in the region”.
  • Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris, who also holds the foreign affairs brief, said “a window now exists to end this unimaginable suffering, for both Israelis and Palestinians”. He added: “To halt the violence, return the hostages to their families and get urgently needed humanitarian aid into Gaza at scale.”
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz insisted that “all the hostages must be released immediately”.
  • Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that “we must never forget the atrocities that were inflicted by Hamas”, and also welcomed Trump’s plan to end the conflict.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron said: “I reiterate France’s call: the release of all hostages and a ceasefire must take place without delay.” He added: “Such an abomination must never happen again.”
  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called October 7, 2023 “one of the darkest days in history”. But she also said Trump’s plan “offers an opportunity that must not be wasted to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities, bring home the hostages still in Hamas’s hands, and begin a process toward peace and security throughout the Middle East.”
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the “immediate release of all hostages and a ceasefire are now within reach”. She added: “This moment must be seized to pave the way for a lasting peace in the region, based on the two-state solution.”

Hamas slams ‘unprecedented Arab failure’ for the situation in Gaza

Hamas has released a statement on the second anniversary of the unprecedented attack it led on October 7, 2023. Here are some of the major talking points from that statement:

  • The battle and its repercussions continue to “cast their political shadows”, with military aggression on the region, as it marked “a major turning point in the political and military landscape” of the Middle East.
  • Israel continues its brutal war against the Palestinian people, “committing massacres against defenceless civilians, amid shameful international silence and complicity and unprecedented Arab failure”.
  • “Popular steadfastness, support around the resistance and the heroism of the people of the country and its people continue, confronting the occupying foreigners and scum of the earth.”
  • “Two years on, our people remain rooted in their land, clinging to their legitimate rights in the face of plans for liquidation and forced displacement.”

UNRWA calls for immediate ceasefire after two years of war in Gaza

UNRWA has urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, marking two years since the start of the devastating war.

“Two years of war in Gaza. Two years too long,” the agency said in a post on X. “It’s time for a ceasefire now.”

UNRWA called for the release of all Israeli captives and Palestinian detainees from Israeli prisons, and for Israel to lift its siege on the enclave to allow “a standard flow of humanitarian aid and commercial supplies” through a UN-supervised mechanism.

Israel carrying out ‘health genocide’ in Gaza: Health Ministry

The Health Ministry says what is happening in Gaza is not just “a humanitarian crisis” or “long record of crimes” committed by Israel, but “a complete and deliberate collapse of the foundation of human existence represented by the health services system”.

In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said the healthcare system has been subjected to “devastating and fatal blows that have struck at the very nerve of the nation”. “These crimes have earned the description of health genocide, given the catastrophic indicators that have ravaged the health and humanitarian landscape in the Gaza Strip,” it stressed.

  • At least 67,173 people have been killed, including 20,179 children, and 169,780 wounded in the war.
  • The number of medical personnel killed has reached 1,701, with 362 detained under the threat of forced disappearance, deprived of their rights.
  • Israel-forced famine in Gaza, which has been worsening each passing day, caused 460 deaths, including 154 children. More than 51,100 children below the age of five suffer from severe malnutrition.
  • Twenty-five out of 38 hospitals are out of service, while the rest operate partially under difficult conditions.
  • Israel has destroyed 103 of 157 primary healthcare centres, and the remaining are partially operating.
  • More than half of the needed medicine is not available, while 66 percent of the medical equipment needed is not there.
  • Hospital bed occupancy increased to 225 percent by the end of September, compared with 82 percent during the same period last year.

PRCS says 29 staff killed by Israeli attacks in war on Gaza

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says 29 of its staff have been killed in Gaza while carrying out humanitarian and medical duties since the war began.

PRCS said its teams have been “directly targeted, without care or regard for their humanitarian missions or their protected red crescent emblem”.

Among those killed were two ambulance workers “assassinated” in January while trying to rescue five-year-old Hind Rajab and her family, and eight others killed in March when their ambulances were struck by Israeli forces.

It added that several PRCS hospitals and medical centres have been forced to close due to bomb damage and evacuation orders by Israeli forces.

Gaza’s civilian death toll climbs to 14% of total global violence

Nearly 14 percent of more than 489,500 reported fatalities from conflicts worldwide since October 7, 2023 – more than 66,600 deaths – have occurred in Gaza, according to new data.

Two years on from the deadly Hamas-led attacks, a study by ACLED, a US-based conflict monitor, paints a devastating picture of the war’s toll. Gaza has endured more than 11,110 air-and-drone strikes and at least 6,250 shelling and artillery attacks.

Following the start of a new offensive last month, the Israeli military extended its presence across more than 75 percent of the enclave, carrying out record levels of razing prior to its Gaza City invasion.

The report also details the Israeli military’s deployment of explosive robots, which Al Jazeera correspondents in Gaza have frequently reported on over the past month.

ACLED says it has documented 110 uses of such weapons. Ameneh Mehvar, ACLED’s senior Middle East analyst, described them as “repurposed armoured vehicles fitted with remote-control systems and loaded with tonnes of explosives”.

‘Rare treasures’: Gaza families face soaring food prices amid famine

Fresh fruit and vegetables have become “rare treasures” in famine-hit Gaza, where a dozen eggs cost $49 and tomatoes sell for $22 a kilo, according to new data from Christian Aid.

The UK-based charity gathered food prices in Khan Younis on September 27, revealing that onions now cost up to 80 times their pre-war price, while a packet of 64 diapers sells for $68.

“Around 75% of people don’t have any money to buy and are relying totally on humanitarian support,” said a Christian Aid consultant whose family remains trapped in Gaza.

Ranin Awad, a 26-year-old mother-of-two in Khan Younis, said: “Food is the hardest challenge. We survive on whatever we can find, mostly lentils, rice and bread when flour is available. Fresh vegetables or fruit are rare treasures. That’s all I can sometimes give the children, just to quieten their hunger for a little while.”

Graphic video shows medical worker attending to girl shot in head

“It didn’t go deep into your head, are you sure?” the emergency worker asks the girl, the left side of her head bloodied. “Yes,” the girl responds, her eyes wide as she is held in another man’s arms.

“So it just scraped your head and got stuck?” the emergency worker asks. The question is met with a slight nod.

The scene was captured amid Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza City.

Quds Brigades targets Israeli army in Gaza City

The armed-wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) says its fighters shelled Israeli soldiers and military vehicles northwest of the al-Shati refugee camp.

The attack was conducted using mortar rounds this morning, the group added. It’s unclear if there are any casualties.

A statement said the “weapon of resistance is created to liberate land and fight the enemy, and it will not be sheathed until these two goals are achieved”.

The PIJ was founded in 1981 by Palestinian students in Egypt with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and other areas illegally occupied by Israel.

Israeli army intensifies raids in occupied West Bank

  • Israeli forces have arrested at least 15 Palestinians during a large-scale raid in the city of el-Bireh and the Jalazone refugee camp, which is located to the north of Ramallah, according to Wafa.
  • It has also tightened its military measures around Ramallah and el-Bireh by setting up checkpoints and causing large-scale traffic.
  • A similar scene has been reported in Qalandiya refugee camp, where Israeli forces have blocked streets and fired tear gas.
  • Raids are also reported in Kafr Nima, west of Ramallah, as well as surrounding villages.
  • Israeli settlers uprooted 150 Palestinian-owned olive trees in Umm al-Khair village in Masafer Yatta, to the south of Hebron.

Israeli military and settlers carry out more raids across West Bank

Israeli settlers have stormed the Palestinian community of Khirbet Samra in the northern Jordan Valley, Wafa reports. Local sources said the settlers entered the area, causing fear and panic among residents, particularly women and children.

In a separate incident, Israeli forces raided the Bedouin village of Balqa, north of Jericho, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Hassan Malihat, general supervisor of Al-Baidar Organization for the Defense of Bedouin Rights, told Wafa that soldiers searched homes in the area and subjected residents to field interrogations. He said the men were also physically assaulted during the raid.

Elsewhere, Israeli forces carried out a series of incursions across the Ramallah and el-Bireh governorates, raiding several neighbourhoods, detaining Palestinians, closing shops and blocking movement between communities.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, at least 35 citizens were arrested from the West Bank since Monday evening.

In Hebron, Israeli forces arrested one Palestinian from the Tel Rumeida neighbourhood and imposed a curfew on several areas east of the city.

At least 41 children have been killed this year by Israeli fire in the occupied West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, according to UNCEF.

Some of the boys and girls were killed during Israeli military raids, while others were killed in settler attacks. A number of them were shot while walking in their neighbourhoods, playing outside or staying in their homes.

“The situation in the West Bank including East Jerusalem, has significantly deteriorated,” UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires told Al Jazeera.

Israeli forces shoot child in occupied West Bank raid

Wafa news agency is reporting that a 12-year-old boy has been shot during raids in the town to the south of Jenin. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it transported the boy to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Israeli forces stormed Arraba and fired live ammunition at civilians during the raid.

Two killed, one wounded in Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s Health Ministry says an Israeli air attack on Deir Aames in the Tyre district has killed one person and wounded another.

A separate Israeli drone strike targeting a bulldozer in Yatar killed one person.

Israel’s attacks on Lebanon continue in violation of truce

In the latest two attacks on its neighbour earlier today, Israeli forces have killed two people and wounded another in southern Lebanon.

This comes a day after an Israeli strike also killed two people in Lebanon’s southern region of Nabatieh.

Lebanon says the attacks breach a ceasefire deal that was announced on November 2, 2024 after more than a year of cross-border fighting between Hezbollah and Israel that started on October 8, 2023, the day after the latter launched its war on Gaza.

Exchange of fire continued until September 2024 when an Israeli military intensification and subsequent invasion killed about 4,000 people in Lebanon, wounded  thousands more and displaced hundreds of thousands.

More than 150 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since the ceasefire agreement.

Much of Hezbollah’s senior military leadership, including Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s secretary-general, had been killed by Israel before the deal.
