‘Rare treasures’: Gaza families face soaring food prices amid famine

Fresh fruit and vegetables have become “rare treasures” in famine-hit Gaza, where a dozen eggs cost $49 and tomatoes sell for $22 a kilo, according to new data from Christian Aid.

The UK-based charity gathered food prices in Khan Younis on September 27, revealing that onions now cost up to 80 times their pre-war price, while a packet of 64 diapers sells for $68.

“Around 75% of people don’t have any money to buy and are relying totally on humanitarian support,” said a Christian Aid consultant whose family remains trapped in Gaza.

Ranin Awad, a 26-year-old mother-of-two in Khan Younis, said: “Food is the hardest challenge. We survive on whatever we can find, mostly lentils, rice and bread when flour is available. Fresh vegetables or fruit are rare treasures. That’s all I can sometimes give the children, just to quieten their hunger for a little while.”

Graphic video shows medical worker attending to girl shot in head

“It didn’t go deep into your head, are you sure?” the emergency worker asks the girl, the left side of her head bloodied. “Yes,” the girl responds, her eyes wide as she is held in another man’s arms.

“So it just scraped your head and got stuck?” the emergency worker asks. The question is met with a slight nod.

The scene was captured amid Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza City.

Quds Brigades targets Israeli army in Gaza City

The armed-wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) says its fighters shelled Israeli soldiers and military vehicles northwest of the al-Shati refugee camp.

The attack was conducted using mortar rounds this morning, the group added. It’s unclear if there are any casualties.

A statement said the “weapon of resistance is created to liberate land and fight the enemy, and it will not be sheathed until these two goals are achieved”.

The PIJ was founded in 1981 by Palestinian students in Egypt with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and other areas illegally occupied by Israel.
