Gaza’s civilian death toll climbs to 14% of total global violence

Nearly 14 percent of more than 489,500 reported fatalities from conflicts worldwide since October 7, 2023 – more than 66,600 deaths – have occurred in Gaza, according to new data.

Two years on from the deadly Hamas-led attacks, a study by ACLED, a US-based conflict monitor, paints a devastating picture of the war’s toll. Gaza has endured more than 11,110 air-and-drone strikes and at least 6,250 shelling and artillery attacks.

Following the start of a new offensive last month, the Israeli military extended its presence across more than 75 percent of the enclave, carrying out record levels of razing prior to its Gaza City invasion.

The report also details the Israeli military’s deployment of explosive robots, which Al Jazeera correspondents in Gaza have frequently reported on over the past month.

ACLED says it has documented 110 uses of such weapons. Ameneh Mehvar, ACLED’s senior Middle East analyst, described them as “repurposed armoured vehicles fitted with remote-control systems and loaded with tonnes of explosives”.
