2014, Game of the Year Runoff

Dark Souls II 6 14.29%

Bayonetta 2 5 11.90%

Mario Kart 8 11 26.19%

Divinity: Original Sin 3 7.14%

Alien: Isolation 7 16.67%

DKC: Tropical Freeze 10 23.81%

Total:42

The 2014 Game of the Year is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
The runner up is Alien: Isolation.
The master thread for all of these contests can be found here.

There needs to be a runoff since 31% of the votes went to the "Other" category.  Three games made the cut from the first round and they are joined by three more from write-in votes.  First here are the three games that made the cut:

Dark Souls II (PS3/XBox 360/PC)
Almost every major series has at least one divisive entry, and in this case that includes Dark Souls 2, at least for the fan base.  However, critics disagreed, giving the game a 91-92 on Metacritic which were higher scores than the first game received.  Dark Souls 2 has also sold over 13 million copies across all platforms.

Bayonetta 2 (Wii U)
The most divisive part about this second entry was the platform it appeared on.  While the first Bayonetta was made for PS3 and XBox 360, Bayonetta 2 was a Nintendo exclusive.  The game scored a 91 on Metacritic and has sold over 1.5 million units total on the Wii U and Switch.

Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Not only was this the best-selling title on the Wii U, but it’s the best-selling title on the Switch too.  Mario Kart 8 has sold over 65.4 million copies total and is still going strong to this day.

These are the games from write-in votes, all of which have a colon in their title:

Divinity: Original Sin (PC)
Larian Studios needed to partially crowdfund this game in order for it to be made.  After completion the game scored an impressive 94 on Metacritic, making it Larian’s highest rated game up to that point.  This humorous game inspired by RPGs like Baldur’s Gate has sold over 2.5 million copies.

Alien: Isolation (PS4/XB1/PS3/XBox 360/PC)
This space-horror game is based on the Alien film series.  Let’s be real though.  Basically, all space-horror games are in some way based on the Alien film series.  (Yes, that includes Metroid.)  Alien: Isolation has sold over 2.1 million copies.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)
Retro Studios crafted this latest entry in the DKC series.  Tropical Freeze had sold over 6.6 million copies total on the Wii U and Switch.

Runoff voting for 2014 Game of the Year will end on Sunday, Dec 10 at 11:59 PM, EST.

Games that didn't make the cut to the runoff round:

Hearthstone (PC/Mac/Mobile)
Five Nights at Freddy’s (PC/Mobile)
Shovel Knight (Wii U/3DS/PC/Mac/Linux)
Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS (Wii U/3DS)
Destiny (PS4/XB1/PS3/XBox 360)
Dragon Age Inquisition (PS4/XB1/PS3/XBox 360)

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I voted other for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze! Imo, the best 2D side scroller ever!

I will give an honorable shoutout to Destiny and especially Sunset Overdrive! Destiny was decent, but the endgame raids were fantastic and put a lot of hours in. Sunset Overdrive, one of the most fun and wacky games I've ever played! One of Insomniac's most creative games they've ever made.

Other:
Alien: Isolation
Possibly the greatest, most intense survival horror game of all time, love the World building, asmosphere, graphics and the A.I.*

Honorable mentions:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Shovel Knigt are amazing 2D platformers

Super Smash Bros for Wii U did give me some interest in that series, though I am not the biggest fighting game fan.

Mario Kart 8 is amazing and maybe the best in its series.

Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker is also pretty good.

I could not get into Bayonetta 2 though, might give it another shot some day.

Bayonetta 2.
It takes everything that was awesome about the first game such as its razor sharp combat and gloriously over the top style, and takes it to the next level with even more insane setpieces and an even more confident and assured Bayonetta with a greater sense of purpose.
A masterpiece.

I wasn’t a fan of Dragon Age Inquisition at launch but after replaying the trilogy back to back last year I fell in love with the game. Dark Souls 2 is also very fun, I’d rate bother higher than my vote but in 2014 they didn’t come close. My vote is “Other - Sunset Overdrive”

Ride The Chariot || Games Complete ‘24 Edition

DA Inquisition, MK8 WiiU, Shovel Knight, Bayo 2, any of those games could make my GOTY of this year. Probably would incline more torwards MK8.
Also worth mentioning Shadow of Mordor, Alien Isolation and DK Tropical Freeze as well. Liked all 3 of them.
Farcry 4 was good as well I guess.

Second good year in a row.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U deserves more love in the Smash and gaming community as a whole. I've seen some people say the original Super Smash Bros. is better than either version of Smash 4. The only people I could possibly understand feeling that way are competitive players.
The 3DS version was a big deal having a portable Smash, and Smash Run is fun.
The Wii U version was my favorite Smash to date upon release and my favorite Wii U game. It's a shame a few of the stages aren't in Ultimate.
Smash 4 obviously gets my vote.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 48 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

Other - The Talos Principle

Easily among the best puzzle games ever, and now that the sequel turned out great as well, I'd say it's a puzzle series second only to Portal.

My top 5 for the year:

  1. The Talos Principle
  2. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  3. Bayonetta 2
  4. Hearthstone (put hundreds of hours in that)
  5. Hyrule Warriors

Shoutout to MK8 as well, admittedly probably the best in series even if Double Dash is the one I have fondest memories of.
