The biggest limitation for handhelds (and Switch 2) versus the Series S is the memory bandwidth.

A Lovelace Switch 2 could've introduced DLSS frame-generation though, which could possibly help get the 30-40fps variable titles to >60fps (with all of the caveats of frame-generation of course) even with the Switch 2's relatively anemic CPU.

I personally don't mind frame-generation in cinematic AAA titles, and don't think most console players would be sensitive to it, but can see why it probably shouldn't be mandatory in games.

Also one would expect 15-30% extra raw GPU power between Ampere -> Lovelace, but I think the T239 probably already has a lot of those gains given how efficient it is, so probably toward the lower end of that performance boost.

But yeah, I think even a Lovelace/5nm Switch 2 would have areas where it is noticeably worse than the Series S. Where the Switch 2 is something like a half tier below the Series S, the hypothetical Lovelace Switch 2 might have been a quarter tier.

The newest version of DLSS 4 frame gen runs on ai cores alone so the switch2 should be able to do so. AMD frame gen is also available. Still input lag and image quality are not great at low base fps.

DF stacked Apex Legends on Switch 2 against Series S, and while Series S has higher settings for things like shadow resolution and ground clutter, Switch 2 actually has superior image quality thanks to DLSS, as we saw with Cyberpunk.

It seems like going forwards image and texture quality could be two areas where Switch 2 has an edge over Series S thanks to DLSS and more RAM, while on the other hand CPU and raw GPU power favour Series S.

"Ps4 to ps4 pro. It will not produce series s visuals much less ps5. Memory bandwidth is going to be a limiting factor. Storage space will also be curious.

So really nothing changes on my end from last generation. The switch 2 will be for 1st party software and third party will be PC/ps5 for noticeably better graphics and significantly better performance (fps, lighting, shadows, etc.). "

My post from around 18 months ago.

Pretty happy with my prediction. DF has the S2 above the ps4 but below the ps4 pro via Cyberpunk.

Memory bandwidth is 102 gb/s, which will limit resolution mostly to 1080p and most third party will be 30 fps.

Storage is an issue, game key cards is atrocious, granted I am fully digital so not a huge deal for me personally.

Got my unit day 1. World is fun and DK is my GotY so far. Still think Nintendo has the best software in gaming.

The GPU is a more capable then I expected but is quickly offset by the lack of VRR in docked mode. The lack of VRR is absurd to me.

Overall, glad I got one. I don't see myself ever missing out on Nintendo software.

Good to see you back man, it's been ages. :)

That has to the be the most impressive port for Switch2  so far.

I expect we'll have functioning docked mode VRR by the middle of the generation (like with PS5.) From what I've read about the Switch 2's HDMI spec, nothing prevents it at the hardware level. Just needs to be supported with a firmware update.

I hope so.  Really VRR has been an electronic standard since 2020.  There are a few boss fights in DK that constantly drop from 60 fps to 30.  VRR would help so much.

Based on some articles, I am hearing Madden and FC26 are 30 fps, a bit disappointing. I find 30 fps just way too low. I've been playing BotW Upgrade, looks and more importantly plays, so much better at 60 fps. I am hopeful Nintendo targets 60 fps in first party games.

Edit

Which is ironic, given didn't EA say they were quite surprised by the power of the S2....

Just started playing through the Phantom Liberty today, and it's seriously impressive stuff, even more so than the base game.

It's a shame there aren't more showpiece titles, with Nintendo's own games so far being rather graphically conservative and rooted in Switch 1 era rendering technology, but at least CD Projekt Red have stepped up and demonstrated what the hardware is really capable of.

Nintendo has targeted 60fps in most of their games since the Gamecube, even on power constrained systems like Wii and Switch 1. They'll almost certainly shoot for 60 in most of their Switch 2 games.

Personally I find the showcase of Cyber overrated.  Cyberpunk runs 1080p/60fps on a 1060 from 2016.  People have this idea that Cyber destroys high end PC, which isn't true.  Path tracing, when activated, brings high end PCs to their knees...  the S2 isn't doing path tracing.  And this isn't unique to Cyber.  Same is true with AW2, Black Myth and Indiana.  Running base Cyber, no RT, doesn't require a high end GPU.  Don't get me wrong, it is a great port.  But Cyber isn't Outlaws or GTA6.  And according to DF, Cyber on the S2 basically doesn't use RT, minus a few headlights.

Even Phantom on a 1060 runs 1080p/30fps.  Again, a 2016 GPU.  Personally my full judgement of the S2 is going to be based on Rebirth.

Nintendo does prioritize fps, more often than not.  It is well worth the graphical sacrifice.  Latency drops with increase fps, so games are far more responsive and the controls are way more accurate.  BotW Upgrade is superb.  I will happily drop MP4 to 1080p for the 120 fps.

PC is an entirely different beast to a mobile device; a 2016 discrete PC GPU having more juice than a 2025 handheld isn't actually unusual.

In the console space, even base Cyberpunk exceeds what PS4 can handle in good shape, and the Phantom Liberty is more demanding on top of that, as it was developed without the constraints of 8th gen hardware.

It's pretty much the best looking game on the console so far, and manages that on top of being an open world title running a complex city environment, with higher settings than last gen home systems to boot; no small feat for a $450 handheld machine.

So far, I haven't seen anything else released on the platform that's more impressive.

According to DF, above ps4, but below ps4 pro, which was my prediction and fair for a mobile hardware.  I am not saying Cyber isn't a good port, just saying people are using it to "demonstrate" the S2 is good for current gen games, which isn't necessarily the case, Cyber is a last gen game.  GTA6, Rebirth, SH2, etc...  all require more than a 1060.  So it will be interesting to see how those games play out on the S2.  I can't say Outlaws look nor runs all that well, at least not in the current state.  Granted Ubi is lazy, so hard to determine actual impact.

Overall I am happy with the S2, I never thought it would be a Series S.  It fits in the ps4 to ps4 pro range, which is fair for a mobile.

I mean, I wasn't using Cyberpunk as a "good for current gen games" example, simply as a "this is the best looking thing on the system so far". Although that said, the Phantom Liberty expansion specifically was developed for current gen, with PS4/XBO not supported.

In terms of current gen only titles, it will depend on the game in question. Kunitsu-gami: Path of the Goddess and Split Fiction hold up pretty well at launch. Looking forwards, Cronos: The New Dawn should be one to watch.
