Third batch of hints coming right up:

40) Prisoner's Dilemma

39) Though the game has no combat you can wield an axe and bring it with you suprisingly far

38) There's two of you and both become party members

37) The owls are not what they seem (again)

36) 251

Standings so far have Machina at a slight lead:

  • Machina – 6
  • Mnementh – 1
  • Peelman – 1
  • TruckOSaurus – 1
  • Veknoid_Outcast – 1

Let's see if I can get a tad closer...

36: Pokémon Gold/Silver?

Some more clues

42
- Hitting enemies in a certain spot can trigger a long and agonising (and possibly amusing) death animation.
- Out of all the games that use this particular licence, this one is often considered the best.

41 (incorrect guesses - a Super Mario game)
- I’m not sure why the playable characters in this game weren’t included when the series made the move to 3D, as two of the new characters created for the 3D game were pretty similar.
- The world map is more interactive than in previous games, and houses a few secrets.

40
- If you go against one of the main conventions of the game in the first level, you’ll be rewarded.

Not sure about any of these but I'll give it a shot:

42) GoldenEye?

41) Donkey Kong Country 3?

40) That could also be a Mario game, eh, U Deluxe?

42 and 41 are both correct. 40 is incorrect.

The death animation for Goldeneye is when you hit someone in the genitals, and they let you know that it hurt as they writhe around, slowly dying.

I've always thought Dixie and Kiddy Kong could've been in Donkey Kong 64 in place of Tiny and Chunky. Not sure if a reason was ever given for them not being there.

Good guess, that would fit Ronin as well. This game has a location in it based on Paris.

Does it have driving/racing in it?

Yes, racing is the main part of it although later entries added on another very popular mode.

#40 A historic map inspired by my #40 game which started a series wandering across platforms

Here's the first hints of my next batch. Also when looking at all you guys's hint I really feel like I barely know anything about games .

#40: Probably the coolest special edition I own is the one for this game, it comes with a wooden miniature of an Onager that you could build yourself.
#39: This game features an instrument, which here is just a minor item, but it was used (and so probably retconned) as a major artefact in its (console) successor. Guessed by drbunnig - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
#38: The first in the series to feature naval battles, which is fitting considering the game's imperial era. Guessed by The_Liquid_Laser - Empire: Total War
#37: Technically just a sprite swap of another strategy game, and considering the franchise this is part of, shouldn't they have done more?
#36: A handheld entry in the series which unlike its console brother actually is a numbered sequel.

38.  Empire Total War?

37.  Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle?

36.  Metroid 2?

I feel like the item is an ocarina, and the game is Link's Awakening? Or A Link to the Past? Not sure what the instrument is in ALttP.

Yeah I can't seem to begin to guess most people's games, but to be fair nobody can guess a few of my games as well.

#40 is Age of Empires 2?

#39 is Zelda game? Link's Awakening?
