Keep in mind Sony did go from TSMC 7nm+ to 6nm in the original design which was about a 15% chip size reduction with a corresponding decrease to power consumption and heat.
Sony did compensate with a smaller, simpler, cheaper heatsink.
Over time as a process matures, you tend to get better electrical characteristics in your silicon as well which can increase yields and also further reduce power consumption and heat.
And 6nm has been around for years now, it's matured.

Not really.
Microsoft gave you 1 Terabyte of SSD space INSTEAD of the optical drive, overhauled controller, reduced power consumption, smaller console size, Better Wifi and Bluetooth... They aren't even remotely comparable, Microsoft is giving you genuine upgrades for the same price with a trade-off of no optical drive. (Boo!)
I would personally rather keep the optical drive, but that's me.
To Sony's credit they did increase the SSD size in the digital console, but only by a quarter of the amount that Microsoft did.
