If the bulk of the size of the original model was because if the can to keep the noise down, will the slim one being 30% smaller make it alot louder as a result?

They've made a lot of process improvements internally, even with the current form factor. A lot of the internal stuff has been shrinking.

Also, it seems like a bad business practice to announce this a mere month in advance.

I think a month is a relatively long time. You don't want to see a sales drop because people are waiting for the slim model.

I looked at Xbox, and it's more common to release the same week as announced than it is to be more than a month in advance.

Xbox 360 S: announced 4 days before released in the US

Xbox 360 E: announced the same day as released in the US

Xbox One S: announced June 13th, released August 2nd

Xbox One S All Digital: Announced 3 weeks before launch

It isn't meant to Wow you. Sony literally released a 20 second video and didn't even call it Playstation 5 slim (still called simply Playstation 5). It is simply replacing the current model. Only differences are-

1. It comes with 1TB SSD.

2.Detachable disk drive.

By the way there is a Horizontal stand that comes with the PS5.

Not exactly something worth mentioning tbh. Idk why stands are even required in the first place and now they're being charged for. Sony created the solution to a problem that didn't need solving to begin with.

I wasn't expecting to be wowed. Just.....interesting design and business choices that were made.

And yet you mentioned the vertical stand being sold separately and conveniently left out the one (Horizontal stand) that comes with the PS5.

So i had to point it out.

Yeah, because I was naming the differences, so therefore, a way to place the PS5 horizontally is still there. Come on man lol

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Original Digital version dimensions:
390 x 92 x 260 mm

New Digital version dimensions:
358 × 80 × 216 mm

Not the biggest difference.
But when the original was as huge as it was, any size reduction is welcome, provided it runs as quietly with no heat issues.

1 TB drive is a step up from the 825 GB in the original.

Not sure yet which version I will get, but I can't really wait for an actual Slim version since Tekken 8 will release soon.

I'm impressed that they made the stand dumber.

I thought the current stand was at least reasonable. It was included and it supported both horizontal and vertical; and had the little screw trick. Even though it was suboptimal, it at least felt like it was mostly thought out.

And now you have to buy a worse stand for vertical. Although I'm curious how bad it will be.

Although I wonder how many people will not use the stand. It looks like it might be flatter than the current model, so it might need the stand less.

Noisepurge on Era made a comparison

I was expecting the "Digital Edition" to remain at the same price, the disc drive bundle to get a $20-$50 pricedrop vs the current model, and the separate disk drive to cost a $100 ($20-$50 tax for not paying up front).

Sounds like I only got the tax part right!

Okay this is I definitely like! Really highlights just how much smaller it is overall compared to the original launch version and not just slimmer. Even if the bottom half is more comparable in size.

PlayStation's inflated ego is on display once again. Slim models are supposed to be cheaper than standard models, not the same (or more in the case of the previous Digital vs the Slim Digital). Also, it seems like a bad business practice to announce this a mere month in advance. This should've been announced between June-September.
I'm so glad I didn't get a PS5 in 2023, because I would feel extra salty right now.

So that nobody will buy a PS5 starting from June as people will wait for the slim? Sales would drastically drop if this was announced way ahead of time.

Sidenote: I'm surprised Sony didnt try to make a Spiderman bundle with this instead. Either push the spiderman date back or the slim date forward to align with each other. As wells.

I stand corrected. I remembered things wrong. PS4 Slim was announced mere weeks before its release, same with the PS3 Slim. PS2 Slim was about a month or more in advance announcement, like this PS5 Slim.

Still, the pricing complaint still stands.

They really couldnt include a simple plastic stand for that price?
