I'm the opposite. I hated how SM64 controlled, couldn't get on with it until later 3D Mario games with better camera. TR however, perfect control. The game was grid based, same as the controls. Once you see the grid it became easy to puzzle out the steps needed to get to places. I never liked the reboot, too much combat and the controls are all on auto pilot nowadays. The early games had you plan out the steps to get to places, I miss that. It was more aerobatics than run and gun.

This was close to my experience.  I haven't played Tomb Raider since the 90's, but I remember it being a lot of fun.  SM64 was disappointing from the moment I first tried it.  I tried it again several years later on the DS and it still wasn't fun.  I think most of the people who really love SM64 are the ones who grew up with it.

If thats the case, then every retro game people love is just because they grew up with it. SM64 controls hold up. I grew up with Croc, but those controls are ass now.

Other: Diablo

Diablo not being in the pool is pretty sad, I know there are only a few games that can be put on there, but still...

My hopes for LoD being the pool are really low, now.

It may partially be because Diablo released in 1997 although I do know there was always those unconfirmed claims that Diablo released, at least in the US, on December 31, 1996. So may be able to count on a technicality.

I plan to put Diablo in the 1997 poll.  It's hard to know which other PC game to put in the poll with it, because there are a ton of good ones though.

Can't go wrong with Age of Empires, Quake II, Fallout, or Ultima Online to pair with Diablo for PC in 1997

It wasn't exactly disappointing, just didn't control all that well imo. The snow/ice stage was terrible and the trailing camera often worked against me. I had played many better controlling 3D games before so it just felt like a poor implementation at the time. I've never liked the camera control by Nintendo, I'm glad BotW finally gave us direct control over the camera. The trailing camera in prior Zeldas was always one of the negatives.

SM64 also wasn't the first 3D platformer (Alpha Waves 1990), nor the first to use an analog stick to control the character (Vectrex), yet Mario did popularize 3D platformers for consoles. And it was a system seller, heck it got me into buying the N64.

I grew up with Pac Man, Frogger and Space Invaders, controls still hold up :p

Early 3D games, including Mario 64, just haven't aged well. Playing the first Wipeout again, it's all over the place with warping textures. Even Half-Life in its original form is hard to get into nowadays on our big screens. Plus it was a big step down from the fidelity we were used to in 2D and 2.5D games. And even 3D games on PC.

I've tried playing SM64 again years later, still didn't like the controls. Love Galaxy and Odessey though.

Those sound good on paper, but do you plan on voting for those over Diablo or any of the console games in 1997?  If so, which one?

Honorable mention should be Metal Slug. Took the Contra formula and beefed it up. ^^

I plan on voting for Gran Turismo, it launched in 1998 in Europe and NA though, but I guess first release date (December 23 1997 Japan) counts?

For PC, Diablo is my most memorable experience of 97, next to Riven and Dungeon Keeper. But can only vote for one :/

Personally, no. Quake 2 and Diablo would be honorable mentions, but a console game will have my vote for 1997.
