The ps5 is likely to outsell the Nintendo wii if it continues at this sales pace. I didn't think this was possible a year ago. Looks like it's the return of Playstation in Japan

Sony doesn't give two cents about japan (and neither does Japan about Playstation) unlike Nintendo.

Their primary focus has been US and Europe for well over a decade at this point.

Outside of 3rd party deals like FF, MH and DQ, they don't have a single first party game that targets the Japanese audience.

Sony must be pretty happy with the way PS5 is selling in japan (better than PS4 and PS3 when launch aligned) with no real effort on their part.

Around the Network

PS5 4 million.

Switch 30 million.

FF XVI already out of the top 10.

Strong hardware all around except PS4 dropped hard.

By how much is the Switch behind the DS in Japan?

2nd-best week 31 ever for Switch!

Playing Xenoblade 2 before I buy Xenoblade 3 (otherwise I couldn't wait to play 3).

Can they announce a new Fire Emblem? A remake of Genealogy or Tellius would suffice !

the return doesn’t have to mean it reigns supreme. it’s the return of Playstation to a closer second place.

Fair enough.  I just remember when Playstation dominated Nintendo.

Only during the PS2 era. In every other generation Nintendo handhelds have sold way better then Playstation consoles.

The Wii wasn't really that big of a seller in Japan, the PSP outsold it in Japan so it wasn't even the no.2 system in Japan that gen.

That said I don't think Playstation is back in Japan, more like a lot of those systems are going to China via scalpers. The prime PS1-PS2 era where Playstation games like Final Fantasy would dominate the charts ... well today you have like Pikmin trouncing Final Fantasy XVI's sales, lol. They're definitely not back.

When was this domination?

Top selling consoles in Japan

1. Nintendo DS - 32.9 million units
2. Game Boy/GBC - 32.47 mill
3. Nintendo Switch - 30.79 mill
4. Nintendo 3DS - 25.26 mill
5. Sony Playstation 2 - 24.42 mill
6. Playstation Portable (PSP) - 19.6 mill
7. Sony Playstation (PSOne) - 19.4 mill
8. Famicom - 19.35 mill
9. Super Famicom - 17.17 mill
10. Game Boy Advance - 16.96 mill
11. Nintendo Wii - 12.75 mill
12. Sony Playstation 3 - 10.46 mill
13. Sony Playstation 4 - 9.45 mill
14. PC Engine - 8 mill
15. Playstation Vita - 5.86 mill
16. Sega Saturn - 5.8 mill
17. Nintendo 64 - 5.54 mill
18. Famicom Disk System - 4.5 mill
19. Nintendo GameCube - 4 mill
20. Playstation 5 - 3.93 mill

A few things I find interesting ... the Saturn outsold the N64 there .... sweet merciful crap Nintendo, whoever insisted on cartridges for the N64 really needed to be hauled off onto a catapult and flung into the ocean. To be outsold by the Saturn, which Sega didn't even support past like 1997 is an embarrassment. 3DS was also a pretty big success in Japan. Also never realized PC Engine sold that well, I knew it was for a time pretty popular but 8 mill in the early 90s is really solid.
