Forums - Nintendo - How Nintendo could make their Directs more interesting

I'd give the latest direct probably a 15 out of 10. So disagree on everything you just said,
"would you rewatch it".. is just absurd to score something by.

This isn't a Pixar movie - it's a game announcement.

You are bound to love Earthbound.

The Direct format does work but it is plain aside from an occasional small gag. At least Nintendo still puts some character into their presentations unlike many others though I do miss when they had elaborate skits like Reggie fighting Iwata.

That was a Smash trailer for Mii fighter, not one of those non sequitur skits that they used to do.

To be more clear I'm referring to all the times they did something elaborate in a direct like that example or the puppets for the Star Fox Zero announcement.

I think Nintendo is the best in the business at these directs. I could see taking out a few games here and there but other than that this last direct was damn near perfect.

Nintendo Directs are perfect the way they are

So basically, you mistook your opinion in another thread for the OP we got ?

Huh, it prolly explains why the post seemed so emotional based which kinda clashed with the subject of the thread

Less people talking and more showcasing of trailers/gameplay.

The point of a direct is only to aggregate news of the games coming in the next months. In a visual way because it's more appealing than publishing a list on a website

It's not about detailing the games. If that was the point the directs would last hours

I don’t disagree that a visual format is more appealing than publishing a list on a website. My point is they did this poorly. In this case, reading a list is substantially better because this Direct felt like 3-4 minutes of cool stuff and 30+ minutes of bloat. They could have made this Direct substantially more effective had they compressed the mediocre trailers into a much shorter video and focus more heavily on the spotlight games.

And hours if they detail games? We both know that’s not true. Lots of past Nintendo Directs detail games, and they were shorter than this one.

This Direct was the epitome of a quantity over quality. I’m not saying the games on it were bad, but that Direct did nothing to improve my interest in any of those games… perhaps a small amount with Mario RPG and Star Ocean 2–but the rest of it I could do without.

Well, maybe you’d find stuff you’d like to rewatch if you actually enjoyed the Direct.

You can disagree with me all you want, but it begs the question: why did you hate the Breath of the Wild Direct and Switch reveal so much? And why do you think this one is the best thing to ever hit the video game industry? Why don’t you think Directs should be informative, explain the experience, or entertain? Why do you like bloat?

And yeah! I rewatch parts of the Directs I enjoy. Maybe for entertainment (like a high quality trailer), maybe because there’s information I want about the experience - like with the Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing New Horizons Directs. If you find me weird for that, then I’m a weirdo. Cheers :D

By the way, maybe we are different, I wouldn’t rewatch a Pixar film unless I was forced to… Well, with the exception of Brave, perhaps; the beginning of Up as well.

Yeah, a goof on part. But it’s prompted a lot more engagement than I anticipated it would.

Interesting it comes off as emotional. I was aiming for something critical and self-reflective. It basically came from mulling over what I liked about my favourite Nintendo Directs, why I found this one so bleh, and how I could put some criteria for a personal scoring of presentations. Each  piece of criteria with an increasing degree of difficulty to score points in. So, the ones I found moderately useful would be 2 or 3, the excellent ones score a 4, and only the great ones would score a 5.

Your opinion on this direct is very weird. It had good pacing, a lot of big announcements and I think it had significantly less bloat than most other directs. If you only found 3-4 minutes of cool stuff in a 43 minutes direct then you were just not interested in anything but one or two games. That's just too bad. The Pikmin segment was longer than that.
