So, I don't think Sony is going to quit on Marathon just yet. There's too much riding on it, and it sounds like Bungie has no other definitive plans yet. Gambling that Marathon can be turned around seems the best bet right not to ensure they don't lose talent from a team that has shown it can be incredibly profitable in the live service game.
But I think there are obvious short-term and long-term planning that needs to take place. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but the game needs a respawn feature yesterday. Season 2 needs to begin with it. It'll help set it apart from other Extraction shooters, but it'll also help with onboarding efforts, which itself is a massive issue right now that needs to be fixed.
I think they also need to have some community aspect where you can just hang around in a shared space with other people, testing out weapons etc. Just some random casual aspect to it. I also believe that remaking the trilogy should been underway. They have the graphics engine, they have the gameplay: they could do the absolutely bare minimum if needs be, but Marathon trilogy doesn't even exist on console so it's still something. I think it could be released as single titles for a lower entry point: this allows the opportunity for ppl buying into the SP experience of Marathon to look to jumping into the MP experience. Not saying it will happen, but they have to be trying whatever they can.
But honestly, one thing Sony needs to do is to showcase Marathon in this rumoured SOP: highlight changes being made for Season 2 in a couple months. highlight that there'll be a free weekend for ALL users (through the beta download). But if Sony is going to stick with Marathon longer, then they need to keep talking about it and updates. This is something I think MS does particularly well with their live service titles like that pirate game (name forgetting off the top of my head): it always shows up.
But I could be wrong and the game is gone tomorrow lol
