It's more that the further you go towards the extremes of both left and right, the more you encounter a lot the same behaviours; bullying, moral absolutism, a hatred of certain groups of people based on sex/gender/ethnicity/etc, a belief that the ends justifies the means and that everyone else must be forced to conform to their ideology, heavy restrictions on what people are allowed to do and say, intolerance of any difference of belief, the use of coercion, ostracization and censorship to silence and punish critics, etc.

That's not to say that the left and right are equivalent of course, that's not what I mean at all, more that extremists of both stripes exhibit a strikingly similar playbook.

What you are describing is human behavior. The more passionate/obsessive someone gets, the more likely they are resort to any means necessary and push out others who don’t feel the same. That not horseshoe theory, that’s being in a bubble and thinking you are superior.

Horseshoe theory says the further left/right you go, the more you have in common with the other side and less in common with the center. When discussing policy issues, horseshoe theory is bullshit. Let’s look at a few examples.

Healthcare-The left wants socialized healthcare. The right wants private healthcare.

Abortion-The left wants abortion to be the decision of a woman and their doctor. The right wants to ban all abortions.

Climate Change-The left wants to transition to renewable energy. The right wants to expand use of fossil fuels.

At what point do people go so far left/right that they start seeing eye to eye on these topics and others?

Their values are polar opposites, it's more that their behaviour in pursuit of those values becomes similar if you go to either extreme. It's a similarity of mindset rather than actual beliefs.

So the Republicans want to name the dullest Airport after Trump. Fits hissingly.

Seriously though, don't they have anything better to do than to dance around praising the golden calf?

They could rename Mount Trashmore in Florida after Trump. I'd be okay with that. Tallest landfill in the United States.

On the topic of horseshoe theory.
I do see factions of leftists making puritanical arguments against the sexual revolution all the time. Even wanting to get sex, nudity, and romance out of media. So, I absolutely believe in horseshoe theory and consider all of these puritanical factions to be ideological enemies of freedom of expression.

If Paul Verhoeven-like films aren’t being made anymore, then there’s a problem. His films have always been controversial, but that was the beauty of the 80s and 90s - controversial media was permitted, and widely distributed without having to worry about being extinguished by the puritanical movements. Now even streaming services are falling victim.

I don’t generally fashion myself a slippery slope thinker, so five to ten years down the road, I don’t want to ask the question of how long until new films featuring nudity and sex will only be viewable on sites like pornhub?

The difference in movies now is the recognition of consent and body autonomy.  There is no pressure to remove sex, nudity (and romance?  How did you draw that conclusion?) from media.  But there has been great pressure (Me Too movement, post-gamergate and such) to raise awareness of consent and body autonomy in everyday life.  Media is often a reflection of current society and as such is also addressing those issues.

What you are seeing less of is the misogynistic, gratuitous, voyeuristic, patriarchal sex and nudity.

Sex sells, always has, always will.  But how it is presented will shift as society as a whole shifts.

There's Democrats soundbite, thanks Trump.
