"So you'd hurt your fists, just to damage the person attacking you?"

I don't think the tariffs have anything to do with any trade deficit. They're designed to damage the economic capacity of anyone China could quickly and easily control. Like sanctioning Belarus only it's proactive instead of reactive.

The tariffs were based on trade deficits.

the conversation

"Trump’s new reciprocal tariffs have been calculated by taking the US trade deficit with each country, dividing it by total US imports from that country, then halving the resulting ratio and converting it into a percentage.

For example, in 2024, the US imported approximately US$605.8 billion from the European Union, but exported only $370.2 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $235.6 billion.

Dividing the deficit by total imports from the EU gives a ratio of 39%. The White House interpreted this figure as the EU’s trade “advantage” and subsequently imposed a “discounted” 20% tariff on EU products – roughly half of 39%."

So putting a tariff on literally everyone?

You're not paying the higher taxes, American companies are. If you retaliate then you'll pay more.

We are paying the higher costs.

Companies aren't going to let these taxes drive into their profit margins, they're going to extend the costs to us.

It's a major issue with this kind of taxation scheme.

I've seen the tariff calculation and it doesn't make sense in regards to any deficits.

"oh no the dollar is getting weaker so now US exports will become even cheaper just like what China does every single year"

Some of your responses make me feel like you're just tossing out random ideas and hoping that they're relevant.

Uninhabited islands have resources that can be exported. They might not have humans permanently stationed there but they'll still be visited and owned by a country that is inhabited and governed and levies tariffs.

Why do some of these uninhabited islands have higher tariff rates than the country they are a part of?

Trump probably wants to own it like Greenland

No we don't oppose it.  You can't just let someone bully you into paying them arbitrarily higher taxes.  The point of imposing retaliatory tariffs is to motivate them to remove theirs.

They didn't start the fight but they can't just lay down and take it.  You comment is kinda like saying sell defense when your attacked is hypocritical.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your question.

You're not paying the higher taxes, American companies are. If you retaliate then you'll pay more.

Retaliation means that we'll pay more for goods coming in from the USA which are either not relevant for the majority of people here or can be easily substituted with goods from a different country. Canada is just about the only country that has to be very careful about this, because their economy is much more intertwined with the USA than any other USA+X combination.

On the other hand, Americans will have to price higher prices for virtually everything because they have issued tariffs against virtually everyone, plus their own goods are often crap, hence why they buy so many foreign products.

In other words, countries who retaliate will have a much easier time to weather the storm than Trump and his USA can do. Hence why I am all for the EU to kick the USA's butt. Plus on a personal level, I don't buy any US goods to begin with, so there won't be any hardship on my end anyway.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

It took four months, but South Korea finally removed Yoon from office over his attempt at a coup d'etat.

Unfortunately, the equivalent process in the U.S. is too heavily politicized.

These people just do not live in the real world.

Irrational Nintendo hatred is a real and common thing these days. Want to hate them because they took away Virtual Console and older games? Sure. Want to hate them because they won't publish to PC? Or because they have to deal with tariffs? You're a fanboy.

Gamergate helped fuel the rise of Trump

Didn't buy my American jeans today and a jeans from a Portuguese company instead which I just found because of this shitshow. Thanks Trump lol

Windsor's wait and see: Workers laid off for 2 weeks 'just the beginning'

One union president estimates as many as 600 jobs could soon be impacted

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/trumo-tariffs-windsor-canada-layoffs-effects-jobs-economy-1.7502734

For thousands of Stellantis workers in Windsor-Essex, Friday marked their last shift for two weeks.

The manufacturer says it's pausing production at the Windsor Assembly Plant – where employees assemble Pacifica minivans – in large part due to U.S. President Donald Trump's newly implemented tariffs. On Thursday, the Trump administration kicked off 25 per cent tariffs on imported vehicles. In early May, the administration will apply the same tariff to auto parts.

Companies importing under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) will have the opportunity to pay lower tariffs based on the volume of U.S. content in their cars and parts, the administration has said. But that process is still murky and undefined, leaving manufacturers – and their employees – in financial limbo.

According to Stellantis, 3,200 workers at the WAP will be off the job for now. But there are likely to be hundreds more in the region that will be affected by the downtime.  That's because a web of local feeder plants provide the parts needed to assemble vehicles like the Pacifica. Unifor Local 195, which represents some of these facilities, says at least 600 jobs could be immediately affected.

Jan Griffiths, a former auto supplier executive, says "this is just the beginning."

"The auto assembly plants sit at the top of the pyramid, if you will," she said. "There's a multitude of businesses, parts manufacturers, that support this industry. And we are inextricably linked, Canada, Mexico, the U.S. [...] and you cannot unravel those supply chains overnight."

Glenn Stevens Jr., head of MichAuto — an industry association connected to the Detroit Regional Chamber — says he isn't aware of any suppliers on the U.S. side of the border who have been hit with layoffs yet as a result of the Stellantis closure in Windsor.  "But we know that they will be impacted, of course, as are the shift workers at the plant," he said.

And once unraveled it will be a long time before trust is back to deal more with the US again.

Yes you do.  If you hurt me, I hurt you more.  Its best to give back as much as someone is willing to give to you than let the aggressor believe they can come at you and hurt you without suffering any penalty.  What do you believe the aggressor will do if you just accept their aggression without a proper response.  That will embolden them to then continue to use those same tactics.  You cannot come to the negotiation table in a weak position, nor do you come to the negotiation table to concede anything without mutual respect.

What you fail to understand is that when met with force whether economic or physical, it's never in your best interest to take it.  Trump is declaring economic war.  Its no different then if he sent troops over to every country and said bend the knee or suffer.  So yes, EU must hit back just as hard as Trump administration is willing to take this war.  Also, if the EU is smart, they will not ease one ounce of their response until the Trump administration backs down first.  Here is the reason why. The Trump administration cannot be trusted.  Time and again they have pledge to do something.  Signed agreements and then break them on a whim when Trump doesn't like the outcome.  This administration word means nothing so first and foremost only actions are worth anything.

You are right that the Trump administration is using trade deficit as a tool to try and make the US public believe the US is a victim.  A trade deficit isn't always a negative thing and actually depending on the economy shows actual strength of that economy.  Its way more complex than saying all trade deficits are bad which would be something not even a first-year college economic student would not say if they had even an ounce of understanding.

This whole war isn't doing anything to soften China ability but instead actually throwing them into the arm of the world which is the opposite.  It no different than the trade agreement that we tried to push during the Obama era where we had all of EU and the rest of the world included BESIDES China but guess who killed that.

If you truly believe this is putting any kind of control on China when not long ago they were able to come together with North Korea and Japan to respond to the Trump administration tariffs and also now making deals with all the world leaders in Africa, Canada, Mexico you name it than you definitely haven't been paying attention. This is probably one of the most bone headed move a country could make and its not going to go anywhere near what its being sold.
