Just an update on things from Canada as Liberal support continues to soar.

Jumpin said:

When I posted this two and a half months ago, the Liberal party of Canada trailed the Conservatives by 29%.

In the time since, the Conservative movement has collapsed, and the Liberals now lead by 2%

An update from Canada:

Three years of Conservative dominance of the opinion polls collapses in two months. A few things led to this happening.

1. Conservatives have no solutions for people while shilling for the deeply unpopular oil industry.

2. Bombarding Canadians with irritating "verb the noun" style political ad spam with little depth and are quite grating to Canadians during a time of rising Canadian patriotism.

3. Much of that political ad spam does Trump style bashing of Canada, which in turn shows the Conservative government fund paying to associate themselves with the most unpopular elements of the US government.

4. General shift away from being swayed by pessimism and cynicism, Liberals = optimists, Conservatives = cynical pessimists.

5. The general incompetency of the Conservative Party's strategy. Their political messaging is really missing the mark, about as effective as very transparent strawmen or red herrings. In other words, they're not tackling anything real because they don't have much of a case. They're just making stuff up and hoping it sticks... and for anyone who's paying attention and has half a brain, it's not.

As a note, the political ideology of federal Canadian parties are as follows: Liberals (Center to left of center), Conservatives (Right of center to right) and NDP (Left of center to left), Bloc (Regionalism left of center), Greens (Green politics), PPC (Alternative für Kanada).

There's another story here, many NDP voters are also shifting to support Liberals in response to the Conservative attacks. Many of them for the first time.

At least when it comes time for me to swear allegiance to that fucking King, I won't feel so dirty doing so this time (yes, even if you swore allegiance to the crown in another country, you still have to swear again in Canada because technically, it's a different crown, just the same head).

How a difference a month makes:

The Liberals not only lead in a few polls, but now lead in ALL polls, and continue to widen the lead: Recent polls showing anywhere from 2%, to 4%, to 6%, to 9%, to even 17.7% lead ahead of the Conservative Party of Canada.

I also believe that changeups in the Liberal Party will increase Canadian patriotism and reinforce alignment with European and Latin American partners, while increasingly joining Western civilization while turning more away from the authoritarian elements in Chimerica and India.

And most Canadians want to work with the American blue. Help expand democracy and liberty, and oppose the authoritarianism of the corporate aristocracy and the hate-mongering stupidity of the MAGA brownshirts.

As an American blue, I’m really hoping Canada stays strong and gets behind Carney. I don’t want to see Canada become a puppet state under PP. Anything that weakens this regime is good.

I hope Canada is prepared for the onslaught of Russian and American backed disinformation that will be thrown their way during the election. One reason why I think Carney needs to call an election ASAP before Republican Party + Musk and Putin can inevitably try to interfere too deeply into the elections.

Election will be called on Sunday, if reports are accurate. The vote will take place April 28.

As it stands, this is what the seat projection looks like:

Liberals 178 seats (61% chance of a majority, 90% chance of winning the most seats)
Conservatives 130 seats (0.1% chance of a majority, 10% chance of winning the most seats)
Bloc Quebécois 25 seats (35% chance of a minority with the Liberals, 4% chance needing NDP for a minority)
NDP 8 seats (16% chance of a minority with the Liberals)
Greens 2 seats (3% chance of a minority with the Liberals)
People's Party 0 seats (0% chance of a minority with Conservatives)

One thing working against the Conservatives is that they're an oil-shill party, so their support is heavily in the provinces under the dome of oil propaganda. While the Liberals are a more widespread party. The funny thing is that in the oil provinces, politics are far more polarized, so the NDP (which is further left) tends to be more popular there than in other places. Canada also has a heavily urbanized population, and Conservatives largely appeal to the less informed and more culty rural regions.

This is true in many red states in the U.S too. About seven years ago I worked for a legal contract document review automation company that got a small contract with an oil company to basically look at potential jurors' social media pages and document their political views (for jury selection ostensibly.) The location was deep central Appalachia (can't remember if it was Kentucky or West Virginia.) About 65% of the population were as you'd expect, MAGA. The other 35% were much further left than the average resident of the metro-population I live in (Pittsburgh, at the time, it shifted further left since.) Basically  a revival (since left-wing views trend by age) of old school left-populism.

Also why you see maps like this.

At least on economics, these populations are far more left-wing than people think.

@sc94597

Yeah! I remember Richard Ojeda. He was probably the most far left person in the 2020 primaries. I really like that guy as a politician.

And with all the restrictions and funding cuts on scientists, European countries are starting a race to poach them from the US:

He will probably try to do that with faith instead of that filthy science that is always so mean to him.

DHS arrests Georgetown researcher who is married to the daughter of a Hamas official

https://www.jta.org/2025/03/20/united-states/dhs-arrests-georgetown-researcher-who-is-married-to-the-daughter-of-a-hamas-official

Federal officials have detained a Georgetown University researcher who they said was “spreading Hamas propaganda,” expanding the number of arrests under the Trump administration’s push to crack down on perceived antisemitism on college campuses.

Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national who is a postdoctoral fellow, was arrested on Monday, according to a petition filed by his lawyers and first reported by Politico.

Suri has not been charged with a crime, nor was he named in news coverage about pro-Palestinian protests at Georgetown last year. But he has attracted attention because of his social media posts and because he is married to another Georgetown student, Mapheze Ahmad Yousef Saleh, who is the daughter of a senior Hamas official.

Saleh, a graduate student at the school’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, is a U.S. citizen. Her father, Ahmed Yousef, was an adviser to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, whom Israel assassinated. Yousef criticized Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel as a “terrible error,” a rarity among associates of the terror group.

US court blocks deportation of Georgetown University researcher

A US court has blocked the Trump administration from deporting a Georgetown University researcher who was detained by immigration authorities earlier this week. Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national, is a postdoctoral fellow studying and teaching at the prestigious Washington DC institution on a student visa.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused him of "spreading Hamas propaganda" and having "close connections to a known or suspected terrorist".

Mr Suri's lawyer and employer have denied the allegation. His lawyer said in a court filing that his client was targeted because of his wife's "identity as a Palestinian and her constitutionally protected speech".

Georgetown researcher arrest escalates Trump free speech crackdown

Washington, DC – Nader Hashemi, a professor of Middle East and Islamic politics at Georgetown University, has been a vocal critic of efforts to silence pro-Palestine protesters and academics amid Israel’s war in Gaza.

Those efforts reached new heights under the administration of President Donald Trump, which last week took the extraordinary measure of detaining and seeking to deport Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident married to a US citizen.

Then, immigration authorities came for one of Hashemi’s own students. Earlier this week, agents detained Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, which Hashemi directs.

Khaled Elgindy, a visiting scholar at Georgetown who focuses on Palestinian-Israel affairs, said the Trump administration’s enforcement efforts appear to be entering “a different realm with this case”.

Trump administration’s standoff with federal court over deportation order continues

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/trump-administrations-standoff-with-federal-court-over-deportation-order-continues

The Trump administration’s standoff with the judiciary continues as some of the president's top allies and advisers are ramping up their criticism of federal judges. The Justice Department again refused to provide a federal judge detailed information about deportation flights carrying hundreds of Venezuelan migrants.

  • Laura Barron-Lopez:

So the Justice Department again refused to provide answers. Those are answers about, what times did the flights take off? What time did they land in a foreign country? What time were the migrants transferred out of U.S. custody?

They did not provide answers to Justice — to Judge James Boasberg. And he called the Justice Department submission — quote — "woefully insufficient." He said — quote — "The government again evaded its obligations."

And an ICE official in that sworn declaration said that currently Cabinet secretaries are considering whether or not to invoke the state secrets privilege, meaning that they wouldn't have to necessarily provide this information. And that's typically only invoked, Amna, for classified information.

Ultimately, Judge Boasberg was not satisfied. And this comes as, simultaneously, he is considering whether or not the president legally invoked the Alien Enemies Act. And so tomorrow there is going to be a hearing on the merits of that case and the president's invocation of Alien Enemies.

  • Amna Nawaz:

Meanwhile, we know the administration is already deported with some 200 migrants to El Salvador. They claim that they were all members of a violent gang, Tren de Aragua.

Family members and lawyers have since been coming out and saying these men are not all gang members, they were wrongfully arrested and deported. What are we learning?

Columbia University cedes to Trump administration demands over Palestine protests: Report

https://www.ft.com/content/af25e2dc-e2d9-4baf-8520-d037b5aa87e3

Columbia University has reportedly bowed to the Trump administration’s demands following widespread pro-Palestine protests on its New York City campus, including appointing a senior vice provost with broad authority to oversee the department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies as well as the Center for Palestine Studies.

The university told the administration that it has worked hard to address “legitimate” concerns about how Jewish students were treated on campus, according to a memo obtained by Reuters.

The memo laid out actions the university plans to take that are part of an agreement with the Trump administration’s demands on tightening restrictions on campus protests in negotiations over $400m in federal funding.

In addition to tightening control over the Middle East Studies department and Center for Palestine Studies, Columbia agreed to ban masks and empower campus police with new authority to arrest students.
