This is true in many red states in the U.S too. About seven years ago I worked for a legal contract document review automation company that got a small contract with an oil company to basically look at potential jurors' social media pages and document their political views (for jury selection ostensibly.) The location was deep central Appalachia (can't remember if it was Kentucky or West Virginia.) About 65% of the population were as you'd expect, MAGA. The other 35% were much further left than the average resident of the metro-population I live in (Pittsburgh, at the time, it shifted further left since.) Basically  a revival (since left-wing views trend by age) of old school left-populism.

Also why you see maps like this. 

At least on economics, these populations are far more left-wing than people think.
