It's going to be another one of those days.

Consumers would be harmed. In the short-term, PlayStation users would no longer have access to Call of Duty or would be forced to spend £450 on an equivalent Xbox to play this hugely popular game on their less preferred device. In the mid-term, a significant number of PlayStation users would likely switch to Xbox and/or GamePass. Faced with weaker competition, Microsoft would be able to: increase console and game prices for Xbox users (including those that had switched from PlayStation); increase the price of Game Pass; and reduce innovation and quality. These harms would be amplified by the direct and indirect network effects at play in the industry, allowing Microsoft to further raise prices or reduce quality once its position has become even more entrenched.

"Microsoft wants PlayStation to become like Nintendo" - Microsoft wants PlayStation to become the best selling hardware manufacturer?

OMG the irony. Sony's just going all in on their bs.

That's either a lie or a huge twist of Microsoft's words, Lol.

@BasilZero

I must've forgotten that PS4 controller color b/c that rich blue looks awesome.

Maybe it's the lighting but isn't that one the standard blue DS4?

Yeah, the Midnight Blue color.  It's like it was erased from my memory altogether until I saw Basil's picture.  It's absolutely insane.

Sony's takes on this acquisition have thus far been batshit crazy. How can anyone be taking them seriously?

Around the Network

Sony claims Call of Duty is in development for 3-5 years and has a budget of over $300m.

Sony also claims that Game Pass has reached 29 million subscribers, although, I don't know how they could possibly know that number so take it with a grain of salt.

Uh, doesn't PS+ have like 45-50 million subscribers?

Conclusion

"50. The Transaction threatens the gaming ecosystem at a critical moment. It would take an irreplaceable gaming franchise, Call of Duty, out of independent hands and combine it with Microsoft’s highly successful gaming system (Xbox), leading multi-game subscription service (Game Pass), dominant PC OS (Windows), and leading cloud platform (Azure). The only way to preserve robust competition and protect consumers and independent developers is to ensure that Activision remains independently owned and controlled."

Well, Sony isn't accepting that 10-year contract then, as I said, they're attempting to block the deal outright but as Hoeg pointed out it could backfire on them, if they don't accept the 10-year contract but regulators find Microsoft is fine to acquire ABK then Sony may come out of this with nothing, and regulators will get sick of Sony wasting their time.

If this does ultimately pass, I'm going to expect a fiery statement from Sony, Lol.

First off, we already know CoD is moving to an every other year release cycle moving forward, so most of this Sony argument here about CoD being unique due to it's yearly release schedule is irrelevant now. Secondly, it could only ever have been 3 years of full development because they have 3 main CoD studios and had a yearly release cycle, if there ever was an extra 2 years on any of the CoD games, it would have been pre-production with a much smaller team.

As for the Gamepass number, only way they could possibly know is if a. they are admitting to corporate espionage, b. Xbox told Sony the numbers while trying to convince them to allow Gamepass onto Playstation (hopefully not the case as that would be a boneheaded move by Xbox), or c. Xbox gave the most recent numbers to a 3rd party developer during Gamepass deal negotiations and then said 3rd party developer gave the number to Sony. If the number is true, it would mean that Gamepass has managed to gain 4m subs since January 2022, on a year with zero AAA exclusives for Xbox, and only a small handful of significant 3rd party day one Gamepass deals, which would be impressive for sure, I figured Xbox had gained at most half that many on 2022 since they put in so little effort.

Also worth noting that Sony could close the gap between PS+ mid tier and Gamepass in a hurry, all it takes is copying Xbox by releasing their 1st and 2nd party exclusives day one on PS+. With Playstation being the larger brand worldwide with the larger install base, they will catch up to Gamepass within a year or two if they do that.
