At least when Starfield gets ported over the PS, it will get the meta it deserves.

I did a lot of soul searching these last few 5 hours or so. I just can't leave Xbox. 13 plus years. Unwrapping that Christmas gift of that brand new Xbox 360, throwing that kiddie Wii in the closet. It's where I discovered online gaming, and new genres. Where I shot my first gun. Been through the trenches with the underground movement, where I met Jaysus, and Noble. It's where I told someone to go kll themselves for the first time. Where i got called countless slurs.

I'll stick with Xbox until there are no more Xboxes. Maybe re-buy some games on PS, the ones I really like, in preparation for when that day comes where they unplug Xbox.

Xbox is a love story. Sometimes that love just doesn't love you back.

Forever yours Xbox.

What garbage is this shit!?

Is it weird that I just do not care about this stuff? Like, as long as I keep getting great GamePass content, MS can put games wherever for all I care

Based takes, that is the way to look at it. Keep calm and carry on playing what you like.

For this whole situation, this would be my take on it. The core point of a console ecosystem always was and is the ecosystem, not the console. In the past the console was the main point to bind the ecosystem together, but times are changing.

Nowadays I see the following ecosystems (and a lot of it is ignored by console warriors, because they tend to ignore everything besides console): in the console space Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox. The console ecosystems always have the generational bump to overcome, they start their new generation at zero userbase. In the mobile area we have dominating Google and Apple, but other trying to get in, namely Netflix with their games collection. I am not aware how much gaming content Amazon presents with their gaming store. Then we have the streaming ecosystems, which are a mess currently as signified by the demise of Stadia, but might have a big future potential. There I see Xbox XCloud and Amazon Luna. And in the PC area we have dominating Steam and also GOG and Epic. I don't see itch.io as a ecosystem as it is, it has no binding experience, it feels more like a Bazaar or a flea market.

Anyways, in my opinion Xbox shifts their focus from console to Gamepass. Something I actually like, because quite frankly Gamepass is amazing. They are entering definitely the streaming area with XCloud and are also offering their ecosystem on PC. The Activision acquisition let me suspect they also want to offer something on mobile. Not sure if they do an complete store with their non-gaming apps as well, or more a game-oriented app with achievements and all. Maybe both in parallel. But something will come.

So I don't think they will stop the Xbox console, why would they. If I assume their strategy correctly, they are trying to create the best ecosystem by being available on every device. So the console is part of it and they will not give up on it unless other console makers allow Gamepass on their systems. Steam by the way sees this similar, this is how I see Steamdeck, they are broadening the reach of their ecosystem.

Also, let me steal Ryuus graphic here:

Everyone may put the games down on a bit different positions in this spectrum, but the main thing is: there are experiences considered core and stay exclusive to the Xbox/Gamepass ecosystem. Others on the other hand may be used as invitation to their ecosystem. Nintendo does that with their mobile offerings as well. And despite all the panic (or maybe Chapagne for Playstation fans), we are talking about smaller and older games here and not even all of them, but a selection. As a rumour. People seem to take that as a sign for MS to bow out, but as I see it, it is more a sign of strength, seeing how Xbox is positioned very well for a future with a very amazing ecosystem - amazing because it connects the experience over multiple very different devices.

Also, maybe we will see multi-device gaming experiences again. Nintendo tried something in the past, with linking Gamecube and Gameboy Advance. But think you have a full immersive experience on console or PC, but if you are commuting and play on your phone, this game adds the successes into the PC/console game as say the results of a field agent. Would be interesting to still progressing your main game, while on the phone.

Obsidian Entertainment's Josh Sawyer kicked off the discussion on social media, when he attributed the death of isometric RPGs to the influence that retailers had on the games industry in the early 2000s. Essentially, Sawyer's point is that retailers would create self-fulfilling prophecies and lower stocks for games in certain genres, thus leading to a lack of sales, rather than the reverse.

"BioWare made Baldur's Gate, which sold well, and [Baldur's Gate 2] sold very well. Black Isle made Icewind Dale, which also sold well, but after BioWare announced Neverwinter Nights, retailers decided that 2D iso games were dead," Sawyer recalls. "Temple of Elemental Evil was the last for a long time."

Sawyer claims that he'd often hear sales representatives "declare a genre/style/look was dead with zero supporting data," leading to reduced stocks in said genre, obviously leading to lower sales. "Truly vibes-based forecasting, which resulted in self-fulfilling prophecies," Sawyer continues.

Obsidian and BioWare veterans explain how retailers killed the isometric RPG: "Truly vibes-based forecasting" | GamesRadar+

Ha, I always thought it strange that these complex isometric games were killed over only somewhat more successful games. Nice to see that it wasn't by the devs, but an external influence. Which also explains why it worked so well to bring it back with the internet, with Pillars, Pathfinder and Divinity.

If Xbox is going this way I would be ok with them releasing GaaS or F2P 1st party games on other platforms even Halo Infinite multiplayer on PS5 but keep the campaign console exclusive. Same could be done for Gears 6 which will likely go the same way as Halo with a paid campaign but F2P multiplayer. As for the smaller games like Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush I could care less Honestly.

Keep referring back to it but honestly it was there in front of our eyes this whole time.

Hi-Fi Rush fits into the first bracket and Sea of Thieves fits maybe into the 3rd but I wouldn't describe it as "massive"

A case could be made for finally splitting Halo's multiplayer from its campaign and releasing them separately in which case Halo Campaign could fit into the middle and Halo Multiplayer would fit into the right, but they may keep their staples fully exclusive to Xbox no matter what. At this stage I wouldn't bet on Halo, Gears or Forza making the move. So far we only have a couple niche titles and a 6 year old "new IP"

I have to wonder something else though...Is Microsoft releasing a bunch of GAAS onto Sony's platform going to hurt their own GAAS efforts? More competition and all that, Microsoft has a lot of strong live service titles. Maybe Microsoft wants to get in before Sony spams a bunch of their own, Lol. People's time isn't infinite and there's so many constant updating games nowadays.

About the massive: I think they mean the potential audience, but even a game in a field with mass market audience can fail to get them in the boat.

About the IPs, I also see that it seems like they separate by IP. Which I think would be stupid. As pointed out, a Halo multiplayer could be great to push to other platforms, while the single player experience is exclusive.

And the idea to compete with Sony GaaS on their own turf is devilish cool. Maybe they intend that. With TESO, WoW and Sea of Thieves they already have TOP offerings, while Sony has Destiny and struggles currently with new games. Minecraft kinda morphed into an platform game as well, with offering more content in it. So yeah, maybe Xbox is dominating even on Playstation in the future. Would be hilarious.

Yeahhhhhh, definitely not buying anymore xbox consoles after this gen. PC it is, and maybe PS/Switch2

Same here, I'm done with Xbox hardware, if they aren't going to even try I just don't see the point. I don't have the kind of gaming budget that allows me to buy hardware that gives me access to no true exclusives these days. PC is a better option for me since both Xbox and Sony put most of their games on it (day one from Xbox, late ports from Sony usually except for some 3rd party hats which end up on there day one), plus most of the 3rd parties (many of which skip Xbox hardware), not to mention multiplayer is free on PC. Looking like PC/Switch 2 only for me next gen. Already looking into a PC upgrade right now to replace my archaic build from 2015.

Also, while indies certainly thrived the last years on console, the PC is the main indie platform in an amount that isn't even comparable. The consoles often only get indie games years later if they are successful.

Honestly, as long as I get to play games I’m looking forward too I don’t care where that is.

Seriously though if you care about your profile, achievements and library then why not PC? Most Xbox 1st party is Play Anywhere.
