Well, if you say JRPG, my mind goes to trails, as in past events you were the one holding the banner for the series :) |
That's definitely true.

I never actually got around to playing the first two Suikoden games when they were first released back in the 90s, I honestly probably wasn't even aware they were a thing until much later in life. Over the years I heard a lot of people talk about them in reverence, as these masterpieces of their genre, with Suikoden II often singled out for particular praise. Eventually, I noticed that the games had been released on the PS Store, so I decided to finally give the series a try. I certainly liked the first game well enough, but it was the second game in the series that truly stood out to me, as it had done to so many others before me.

There was simply something different about the story of the game, the heavy political overtones weaved in with the story of war and struggle against a superior opponent were quite unusual at the time, and in a lot of ways still are. Of course, that wouldn't matter without good writing, and Suikoden II has that as well, alongside a genuinely despicable villain, a great music score, and visuals that still hold up remarkably well thanks to the developers decision to use sprites rather than 3D models. It's an excellent game, and one of the finest examples of its genre both at the time and still today.

(NEW)Finally picked up a PS5 over the past year and god this was such a great little game to start with. A tech demo obviously but by far the best pack-in game I've ever played genuinely. Such genius use of the dualsense controller and more importantly just a rly fun collect-a-thon type experience with some unique gameplay segments. Yet again, likely wont last on this list, but a great new experience with a console I've rly enjoyed so far! |
I absolutely adore Astro. The VR one is one of my favorite games ever.
I was afraid my audio hints were gonna be too easy, but it seems the opposite was true.
This last hint for #45 is from a different game, but by the same composer.
And while at it, I'll drop the hint for today's game too. It's, uhhh, the closest thing to a soundtrack this game has. To be more exact, it's the only audio that exists in the game at all.

One of the few on this list to actually gain spots and for good reason. A game that I respect more and more with time. Such a unique and creative concept for a game that really leaves an impact and has something important to say. The gameplay loop isn't particularly for me hence why it isn't any higher but it's absolutely deserving of this list and the impact it's had on so many people

Wait, is 45 Super Meat Boy?

Yes.

Beyond Oasis? |
Nope, not that either. Updated the clue in response to your guess.

- Challenging, highly regarded old school Zelda-like that was exclusive to one of Nintendo’s rivals.
- Based on previous guesses - it was released during a generation after Golden Axe Warrior, after Beyond Oasis and before Okami.

- If you fancy gifting something to one of the ladies you've met, you’ll have to make sure you get change from the owner when you get the chance. Who you'll be gifting it to will be dependent on if it's a new game or new game+.
- What was the likelihood that all these people with ties to each other would be in the same place at the same time?

Guessed by @Darashiva
It has been a long way down for Super Meat Boy, but it's finally managed to *stay in place* after 6 straight years of moving down the list. It's pretty clear I don't rate this game as much as when I started doing this, but it's still a great platformer, with tight, fast and responsive controls that changed the expectation of what movement would be like in this genre - it inspired the Ori games into existing, and for that alone I'll always be grateful. It was also elevated by a phenomenal soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky, that is, before it all went to shit between him and the devs. Maybe if I could have in on the Switch or something with the original music, I'd still be having fun with it, but it is what it is.
P.S.: Apparently people have modded the original soundtrack into the Switch version. Hmmm...
