Forums - Movies & TV - Kevin Smith's Stupid Idea About DC Comics -_-

The DCFU has only one movie that was both critically acclaimed and a box office smash. DC has also barely managed to release two consecutive Certified Fresh movies.

How many years has this failure montage been going on for? At this point, Kevin might be right. DC should either scrap everything and go back to the drawing board or let someone with a proven track record take over.

But that isn't really what this is about. It is essentially about Disney buying an existing show that falls under the DC banner (but not part of the DCEU).

Which, I feel like we should all be able to look at that and go "Oh, Disney owning more of the comic book sphere? That is bad."

Like, yeah, the MCU has some good stuff in it, but it also has a lot of flaws, many of which come from the sameness of it all. We need more diversity in comic book movies, and whether or not DC has the best track record, when I watch a DC movie, they often don't feel like Marvel movies and that is very much a good thing. Disney needs to keep their hands away from DC.

Also, the show is led in part by Bruce Timm, who is one of the most influential and important individuals in the history of superhero TV.

Overall ramifications on the industry aside, I think the point is who would and could step in and save this property. While intuitively it seems that any company should be able to print money with Batman, that doesn't seem to be the case. Whether it's good or bad for the industry Marvel seems like the ones who would most be able to make it work.

Think of it this way, if Smith had named ANY other company, would this thread exist? The idea of Marvel doing a Batman show is so attention grabbing itself that it would almost guarantee success.

I don't think this really needs saving. It just needs a home after the collapse of WB. There isn't really any reason to believe that the creative teams behind this project are incapable of putting out a good product or any reason to believe the homogeneity beam of Disney would improve upon it in any way.

The DCFU would be in a far, far better state that it's currently in if they felt like Marvel movies.  At present, over half of DCFU's movies don't even feel like good ones.  And that is very much not a good thing.

They can be made to feel like Marvel movies WITHOUT being owned by Disney.

If they were made to feel like GOOD movies, that would be a nice start.

But would that be a good thing? When was the last time I was actually interested in one of Disney's Marvel movie? Sure, the majority of the time, they are good, enjoyable movies, but Marvel is already pumping out more than enough of that type of movie. There is basically no benefit to another company just making more Marvel movies. There is however, plenty of room for companies to make comic book movies that aren't just Disney's Marvel movies, like virtually everything relating to Batman over the past 30ish years, or even like Fox's X-Men or Sony's Spider Man to a slightly different extent.

The thing comic book movies need the most right now is being different, even if they aren't always good.

Yes, it would be a good thing if the DCFU was in a far better state.
Yes, it would be a good thing if over half of DCFU's movies felt like good ones.

Or, at the very least, it would be a better thing.

Didn't say anything about the creative. But as someone who follows super hero cartoons pretty closely, it probably does need saving. Thing is, with those shows, the licensing rights are complicated, and make things very hard to do. Because you have to pay royalties, and a you lose a lot of potential revenue sources such as merchandise which is also subject to royalties and other IP agreements. So, a company often would rather invest in their own IP that they'd fully own. And if WB isn't interested in going through, it's not clear that it would be more attractive than other properties.

Spectacular Spider-man was my favorite Marvel animated show ever. When Disney bought Marvel, it got caught in the crossfire and died despite being very well received and I believe doing decently in the rating. These kinds of deals generally don't work out well for animated shows.

Marvel has become bland boring formulaic now. When a Sam Raimi MCU film becomes indistinguishable from the rest of MCU films, you know it's not good. Neither one is making good movies overall. Shazam wasn't bad tho.
