Forums - Gaming Discussion - Remedy Entertainment Enters Agreement with Rockstar Games to Remake Max Payne 1 & 2

Remedy Entertainment, the creators of Max Payne, are pleased to announce that they will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne video games in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games.

Under the development agreement signed today, Remedy will develop the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight game engine. The game’s development budget will be financed by Rockstar Games, the size of which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production. Under the agreement, Remedy has a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game.

How the literal hell does Remedy have anymore developers to spare?!? This would be their 5th or 6th project in active development!

Oh ffs Remedy, stop spreading yourselves so thin. You have like 300 devs working on 6 or 7 projects at once now:

  1. CrossFireX is episodic, more CrossFireX episodes are supposed to be in development currently unless they got cancelled after the game kind of flopped outside of Korea
  2. Alan Wake 2
  3. Control 2
  4. 4 player co-op Control spinoff called Project Condor
  5. a AA multiplayer game called Project Vanguard
  6. a rumored AAA new IP with Sony as a PS5 2nd party exclusive
  7. Max Payne 1+2 remake project

As a big Max Payne fan...

Finally more Max! Hoping this will spur them on to make a fourth game. But I'd take a remake of the first two games with Northlight Engine.

At this point Remedy is averaging like 50 employees per game. That doesn't seem like enough. However, Max Payne and Alan Wake are IMO Remedy's best games. So I am down for a remake MP.

Sam Lakes face still needs to be Jpeged on Max Payne.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Not played them before, but might be interested in this, depending on how polished the remake ends up being. Remedy have my attention after I ended up really enjoying Control. As others have said though, I hope they're not spreading themselves too thin.

The thing with game development is you don't have 300~ people working on a game all at the same time, from start to finish.
Different phases of development require more/less people than other phases of development.

I would assume Remedy is allocating staff to a project in a dynamic per-needs basis... So if a project needs 150~ staff for a few months, they allocate that... Then after that need has stopped, shift them to another project.

It's ensuring everyone is kept busy every day... Rather than forcing the hire/fire cycle that oft-plagues game development.

Although, they will probably need to do some more hires...

Unnecessary to announce it until it's within a year of release. Pre hype is bad hype that just leads to fan frustration, developer crunch, and less software sales due to it being stale feeling on release day rather than a breath of fresh air. They should have waited to announce this for a long time.

As a fan of both games this announcement is super exciting. Particularly cause I'd like to have a great console version of the second game which is one my all-time favorites. It's also relieving to hear that Remedy themselves are going to be handling the development, specially after the GTA remaster fiasco.

Hopefully this release will be successful and we get a continuation to the series made by Remedy as well. If that were to happen I'm guessing they'd disregard Rockstar's MP3, which is good game on its own but I wouldn't have a problem with its plot being retconned out of existence.
