Forums - Sales - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch

Anytime a person begins a sentence with "The only reason the PS2 sold.." or "The only reason the PS2 has this record.." you know your about to get some Grade A bullshit excuse. 248 pages in the thread and still shoveling the same crap over and over again from the beginning of the thread. Who cares why it sold, it sold that amount and that's all that matters.

Do people discredit the X360 numbers because of Rrod and repurchases inflated the numbers? No they don't, they're accepted. It's only when certain people can't accept that their precious Switch didn't beat the PS2 number(yet) and have to think of constant excuses for their preffered plastic handheld. Some people need to have some eggnog, relax a bit and stop being so obsessive.

The only reason the ps2 sold 156 million or whatever it is supposedly at is because the ps3 launch was a failure and sony decided to continue to push sales for ps2 so they can increase revenue because ps3 just wasnt cutting it. Once ps3 was able to stand on its own two feet, the ps2 was no longer needed. The switch on the other hand has sold 156 million because it was a good system with good games and people wanted it.

I am discrediting the PS2. There's no law that says I can't or no one is allowed to look at any context or apply any critical thinking skills to this topic.

Everyone and their grandma knows full well the Switch would easily pass this number if Nintendo wanted to discount the system to a budget price and continue to sell it for a few more years. Anyone seriously want to dispute that? The Switch has outsold the PS2 by a large amount through 8 years and would continue to do so for another few years if allowed to do so.

Like I'm sorry but this idea of "shhhh!!!! you're not allowed to say that out loud though!!!" is silly. I'm saying it because it's true.

If you want to start talking hypothetical and contributing factors and the topic to devolve into:

"If Switch didn't wait 8 years for successor DS would have easily beaten it!"

"If PS2 didn't have a dvd player!"

"If we take the higher price into account!"

"What about inflation?"

"If it weren't for COVID!"

"The world population is much bigger now!"

"The gaming industry is bigger now!'

"The economy is bad no one has money!"

"Mobile gaming hurt it's sales!"

The thread will just become an endless debate with people discrediting the sales of systems and using various factors to try and put their console in the lead and paint their systems sales as more impressive. Because there's many angles to discredit what the Switch, or any other system has done in the same way you're trying to discredit the PS2.

Ain't no one gonna be happy if the thread goes down this direction.

Ill happily discredit the ps2 i have no problem with that at all

This sequence of posts hit hard

nah, ps2 kept selling because there was a market for it. People won't buy a console just because the manufacturer is extending the consoles life. 160 million was hit because they produced that many and it was purchased.

Or maybe people just look at the context and actual facts and form an opinion on that.

If the PS2 is really the "more popular" console, it shouldn't be a large amount behind the Switch after 8 years.

The only reason the Switch 1 may not hit 160+ is because Nintendo may possibly prematurely end its product cycle and not give it a traditional discounted late gen phase that most consoles get the benefit of (to the contrary they've actually increased the Switch 1's price). Everyone here knows it can top 160+ if it was given a proper chance at it.

So yeah, I call it as a I see it. If you have two sprinters and Sprinter A has beaten Sprinter B like the majority of times they raced head to head and then retired after a reasonably long career, I consider Sprinter A better than Sprinter B. Doesn't matter if Sprinter B didn't retire as soon and technically eeked out more races won over time.

For the record too, the DS could have crossed 160+ mill as well IMO, Nintendo simply prevented it from doing so. Had nothing to do with market conditions or demand.

The PS2 was replaced long before 8 years passed otherwise it would have sold much more. The wider context. If DS wasn't replaced prematurely it would have destroyed the switch, it sold 20m the year before it was replaced, higher than the Switch sold each year after 2021. The wider context. But hey we're there this thread is a shitshow now. Congrats lmao.

Having a contrary opinion to some people doesn't make a thread a "shit show", the idea that no one is allowed to voice the obvious is laughable.

Everyone and their grandma in this thread knows full well the Switch has outsold the PS2 by a significant margin over the last 8 years and could easily cross 160 million, the whole issue is dependant on a technicality and not actual market demand. Cut the Switch 1 price and let it sell for even another 18-24 months and it would cross 160 million without any fuss. I doubt anyone would dispute that.

We're just supposed to pretend that's not the case, I'm sorry I'm just calling it as I see it. Some people want to get mad over that, that's on them.

Well yes to an extent they do still buy it because the manufacturer is extending its life. If the manufacturer pulls it, they cant buy it. If the manufacturer lowers the price of the console, they extend the life of the market. So youre wrong.

I might just settle this whole debate and purchase 4 million switch consoles myself. Or if someone wants to go in with me it would be super helpful because then we only have to buy 2 million a piece. Lets not let the sony fans know what we are doing though because they will forever say there should be an asterisk next to the switch's sales and tell us "the only reason the switch sold 160 million is because you vgc users artificially inflated the sales total." Unless they want to follow their own guidelines and view our 4 million sales as legitimate and never to be questioned, but we know that would never happen.
