These prediction threads always turn out so hot

A bit similar like the Wii era, we had a few Wii will beat Ps2 threads:

https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/64666/wii-sales-mindblowing-just-think-about-it-wii-vs-ps2-vs-gc/2/

funny enough if you search it up with google

We also had a multibillion dollar corporation tell us how the PS3 was going to beat PS2 and that company was Sony!

@CourageTCD I'd imagine it was a pretty steep drop for Switch 1 even in the Americas and Europe, considering they likely shipped at least close to 6m Switch 2s worldwide just in June. When the Switch 1 shipped that many worldwide in a quarter outside the holidays, it was during the pandemic and covered 3 whole months. Even though it is practically guaranteed to pass DS, I would also be disappointed if it didn't pass PS2. I do hope they have enough in the tank to get it there. It's still possible. This feels different than Wii VS PS1 because passing PS1 wouldn't have made it the best selling home console. With DS VS PS2, people would just say that it doesn't count because the DS was exclusively a handheld and priced significantly lower (at least at first). Switch 1 is obviously a handheld but can also be a home console (or vice-versa). I personally mostly use mine as a home console (or rather my Switch 2 nowadays).

Plus this is likely the only good shot for a long time someone will have to take the PS2's crown, and it would be great marketing for the Switch 2 and future Switch systems to say that they are successors to the best selling game system of all time. Records are meant to be broken.

What is the general opinion?
Switcth on track to beat PS2, or the chances are small?

Yeah but reading that felt like a waste and distasteful.

Small, but one can be hopeful that it can push through once the Latin American countries get discounts. (If Nintendo will discount their “obsolete” console).

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 160 million (was 120 million, then 140 million, then 150 million)

PS5: 130 million (was 124 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 54 million (was 60 million, then 57 million)

"The way to accomplish great things, is to be indefatigable and never rest till the thing is accomplished." - Joseph Smith Jr.

The ball really is in Nintendo's court right now. If they bundle it with some of their most popular games, give it a significant price drop ($100 or more), and continue making them then the Switch can pass the PS2, I think.

I don't think they're going to do all that though.

This. All the hand wringing about sales slowing down, or this quarter this, that quarter that, if Nintendo wants to push this kart over the line, they can and will. Obviously I think their focus is on Switch 2 sales and Switch 1/2 software sales. But if they’ve got a few million Switches taking up warehouse space in 2026 or 2027 we could see some crazy clearance deals from them.

Switch oled + 2 games for 79.99... so long ps2...

I'm still optimistic that it will surpass 160 million. By the end of March 2025, 152.12 million units had been shipped. Nintendo has made a conservative forecast of 4.5 million units for FY 2026, which would bring the total to 156.62 million. Assuming a cautious estimate of an additional 3 million units over the remainder of the Switch's lifecycle, the total would reach 159.62 million.

However, this projection is conservative from start to finish. It doesn’t account for potential price cuts, special bundles or offers, a new cheaper model, etc. Most importantly, it assumes a short post-Switch 2 sales phase.

If we come close to the 160 million mark without any "bells and whistles," it’s very likely we’ll surpass it with just slightly better performance than this conservative scenario.

2 things show the Switch1 is not done from a Nintendo perspective:

1) New Switch first parties games announced for 2026 in the last spring Direct
2) Switch2 gameshare works with Swith1

Clearly Nintendo is not ready to abandon the first gen Switch any time soon. On the contrary it seems to be part of its strategy for a while going forward.

I forgot about the gameshare thing. I want to try it out but have only seen negative stuff about it online.
