So the goal has officially been set. No takebacksies, Sony. Nintendo, history is yours to make if you want it.

Not necessarily, Sony's quote is over 160M and according to Daniel Ahmad the theoretical max for PS2 is 161.8M

Dang, foiled again. Ok, well then 162 million it must be.
Bid deal. Switch will surpass 151m in 1 month and 160m next year and continue selling after that at a lesser rate and cap at more than 170m before 2028 rolls in.

Notice they said "one of the biggest selling consoles of all time" instead of the biggest!. This also puts Vita below WiiU officially. Also interesting how Sony can say over 160 million and we still move the goalpost? This certainly is an official announcement of 160 or else why not say over 161 million?

They're totally going to release a PS2 Mini (micro console), chanel stuff it down retailers, and claim those should count as proper PS2 sales, lol.
Sony is absolutely trolling Nintendo at this point, why else wait over a decade for these numbers? Switch is on track to outsell DS globally and sell in the high 150s to low 160s.
Even if Switch falls 1-3 million short of PS2 somehow, it's already the most profitable platform of all time and if its successor is a hit that will make PS3 kind of look a little pathetic in comparison because of its inability to follow up the PS2, especially at first.
Lifetime Sales Predictions
Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)
PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 48 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million)
PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)
3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Finally we have at least true confirmation regarding the final sales figure range of the PS2. Sold over 160 Million but we know based on calculations of Sony's PS3/PS2 sales that it's less than 161.9 Million. Giving us a range between 160-161.9M the PS2 sold.
However, I don't think the PS2 exceeded 161 Million. If it did it seems like Sony would've said " Sold over 161 Million" like they did with their other consoles on the website but they didn't.
Some may say Sony was just rounding to 160 Million, but they didn't do that with their other consoles. For example, for the PS1 they didn't say "Sold over 100 Million" which would've made sense if they were rounding, but they didn't, they specifically rounded to the nearest millionth stating "sold over 102 Million". This makes be doubtful the PS2 sold over 161 Million cause if it did, they would've stayed consistent rounding to the nearest millionth like they did with their other consoles, but they didn't.
This narrows down the range to the PS2 selling somewhere between 160-160.99 Million. I'll personally consider the Switch to win if it reaches 161 Million.

No cause the theoretical minimum and maximum sales for the PS2 has been estimated to be 159.2m and 161.8m for a while so another update would just be finally disclosing the exact number between 160m and 161.8m.
