I still think 160 is a given at this point, and could easily see 170 potential depending on how India and Indonesia go.

I'm not expecting major sales out of India or Indonesia. But it doesn't need that to hit 160 million. The Switch has been available on the grey market and the Switch 2 is launching alongside the Switch 1 in Indonesia at least. We don't have an official announcement yet for India.

170 million is and was never gonna happen. It's good Nintendo are looking at new markets, but these nations with masses of poverty and weak middle classes aren't going to have huge markets for a console that is a fairly high price for even western markets these days.

On average this might be true. But because the sheer population size (especially India), they still have a rather large amount of people that could afford it.

The problem is that neither the battery or the screen are what makes the Switch (2) expensive. As such, Nintendo could shave off maybe $70-80 at best by doing so on the switch 2, and less than that on the OG Switch. Basically, it would make those release at their respective launch prices. But as even the Switch 2 can't keep up with the PS5 or Xbox series X, they may be too underpowered for this role. However, this may not be that much of an issue in more developing countries, where consoles as a hile were barely a thing so far.
Pretty much impossible, even for the OG Switch, memory prices and chip prices in general being what they are. Even $249 could be pushing it for the OG Switch. |
I think there are more things they could do for the OG Switch. It is more than just screen and battery that they could save on. Joy Con are expensive on their own. Instead, bring the cost down even more with a wired controller. Keep it at 32GB internal storage. I know I'd buy another model like this if they came out (TV only model).

A quick google shows that neither the PS2 nor the PS5 reached even a million consoles sold. You are grossely over estimating the financial power to to console cost in India regardless of population. It's still massively a population in poverty without luxary spending power and long work hours even in it's middle classes.
The medium wage in India is still $250 a month. Even the Switch lite cost more than that. Looking further 90% of Indians earn less then that and the middle class in india starts at 500 dollars a month. You are severely over estimating what Indian earn, how many of them earn a decent wage that can buy western products, it's massive unequal. India has neither the middle class population nor culture. Rich Indians have it on the grey market or a Switch 2 brought from abroad.

Well lets say they buy half of that, 500K. Still pretty good considering Nintendo forecast 2 million worldwide. More than plenty European countries would.

My prediction
155M...already
155.46M...current
156M...100%
157M...95%
158M...75%
>159M...30%

Yeah, it's not like we're talking about 165m+ here. The Switch is going to be at ~158m shipped by March 31, 2027. Even if the rumored India numbers plus the Indonesia numbers for Switch amount to only 500k total between them, that could mean the difference between passing 160m or failing to.
As long as Switch remains on the market until 2029-2030, it still has a shot.
