Forums - Gaming - Sony needs something to replace Bethesda's single player RPGs.

I am not sure if Sony should attempt that, they don't really have a studio for it. The PlayStation studios make games like Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War. All these games have RPG elements, (some more than others). I think those games define PS, so why would they offer them to try to make something that's similar as Bethesda. Also knowing such a game would be at least 5 years away if they have to start developing it.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I enjoy a good Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Obsidian made games, but I don't think Playstation really needs that type of game. If the next Mass Effect and Dragon Age are great games that is enough for me. On Ps4 we got Fallout 4 and no Elder Scrolls games and I was more than satisfied with the PS4 console generation. If Starfield comes out next year Elder Scrolls in 2024/25, I wouldn't be surprised if Fallout 5 doesn't come out until the next Xbox system.

I would welcome more modern JRPGs, not really played one for a while outside of Persona 5. They also have a back catalogue of owned IPs from Psygnosis days. Who wouldn't like a new Colony Wars or G-Police in modern standards... maybe with VR?

This said, their Single Player games are some of the best around and as more games are turning into action adventure with RPG elements I think they have a lot of stuff covered already.

Man try DQ11, platined it couple weeks ago and I had a blast. Can tell you I`m not that much into JRPGs anymore, but I really liked it, Persona 4 Golden/5/R, Yakuza 7 and sure FF.

If HFW can improve on its RPG elements, moving in the direction of the Frozen Wilds DLC in terms of quest design, a revamped skill tree & branching dialogue, intertwine side missions to the main story similar to the end of HZD, Sony could have an answer to Bethesda style WRPG's in a matter of months. HFW won't have the same flexibility when it comes to character creation/build/quest lines/endings that Bethesda has mastered, but its traversal/combat/platforming/universe is shaping up to be in a class of its own, making it a tentpole RPG franchise that could also be expanded into other genres (IE. Horizon MMO).

In terms of what SIE studio could pull off a WRPG similar to Bethesda, I'd say Naughty Dog and then Santa Monica, have the best shot. Although I'd like to see Media Molecule attempt an RPG with their whimsical style and advanced tools/logic. Not to mention they could always have Bluepoint do a remake of LOD with major QoL improvements lol.

I think that is what the KOTOR Remake is for.

But that's gonna be timed exclusivity.

So is Elderscrolls VI (Don't @ me hehe)

Even if JRPG's aren't the same as WRPG's, do any of the Xbox Game Studios RPG's aside from Bethesda, generate the same amount of mindshare that FF16/FF7R will? I highly doubt it.

Avowed and Fable might.

I don't think it's really something they need. No one else really copies the Skyrim/Fallout design either and considering Skyrim is 10 years old and Fallout 4 is 6 years old you think there would be if there was high demand for similar experiences.

Elderscrolls and Fallout are very popular but I don't think there's huge demand for games that are "like" them but not them.

PlayStation will do just fine with the multitude of other western RPGS like Witcher, Dragon Age, Mass Effect etc.

Well they have been multiplatform for the last 2 gens so there has never been a need to replace them. If Elderscrolls doesn't come to PlayStation 5 they'd definitely be a hunger amongst playstation audiences which is where the majority of Bethesda console audience lays basing off sales of Fallout 4/Elderscrolls remastered. Some may buy an Xbox to play ES6, others will reluctantly play on PC but I think plenty will also just choose to play other games and hope that their fix can be found elsewhere. That elsewhere is an opportunity.

Problem is these kind of huge WRPGs are immense undertakings so you don't get many clones, let alone games that come close to their scale/quality/openness

I mean, potentially it has a chance, but Final Fantasy is still a bigger franchise than Fable, and Avowed is a new IP.

Could but unlikely. But I don't think it really matters because they do have Bethesda and elderscrolls >>>>>>> Final Fantasy in modern day sales
