Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo quarterly sales update (To September 30th 2021) Switch 92.87m

It's a shame we have to wait another 3 months before we get official Metroid Dread numbers.

Kind of a bummer with the chip shortage they have to lower their prediction for the FY. 2021 won’t be the peak but I’m sure it will be close enough. I feel like some people are jumping the gun by thinking because this quarter was a little lower that means the replacement is happening in a little over a year. Have you seen the output of games next year? What would they have for their new console ?

Feels like we can’t really know what’s up with them, the only way i could see a new system release this soon is if it’s a Pro with some exclusive games that will in the end be replacing the original.

Hardware wise it is weak compared to the previous few quarters but that's cause the Switch had been doing amazing so despite a big drop still good numbers and software is still really strong with an adjustment upwards. It is for sure past the peak now but it has already done so well that the heights of the DS and PS2 can be achieved if drops aren't too big.

For the successor release date topic holiday 2023 is the absolute earliest it could potentially release but with the pandemic delaying things I can see them delaying the release into 2024 if holiday 2023 was the original plan. It's not out of the question it still happens since that is a full two years away but I'm not expecting it to release 2023 though I won't rule it out yet.

Skyward Sword wow it's gonna crush the original sales. This will easily sell over 5 million.
Mario Golf already a series record! Hopefully it goes to sell 5+ million all told.
Mario Kart best selling Mario Kart ever now! Likely to pass 50 million lifetime.

Switch hardware low but as expected considering people were waiting for the OLED to come out. Switch sales started dropping as soon as OLED was announced. The quarter probably would have been over 4.5 million without that, but presumably the OLED will lead to a few extra millions in sales over the long term.

The biggest surprise for me is Super Mario Party, 16m is insane. Curious to see what Superstars will sell, it's FAR superior but the timing doesnt bode well.

Yeah I much prefer the Superstars but I don't think it will sell more. It's very difficult for sequels to sell more on Nintendo consoles due to how the games keep selling over time. BOTW2 won't sell as much as BOTW either.

Cool, thanks for the correction. I find it kind of odd that they don't seperate the two though.

It could be because of the form factor. As in Switch Lite is a dedicated handheld while the other two are both the same. So they want to differentiate the numbers for people buying dedicated handheld over those buying the hybrids.

Idk because every DS/3DS model was separated, I think Rol might be spot on, the number is low and will be separated next quarter.

As of right now before I make any adjustments to our Switch estimates we have sold-through of 91.56 million, so gap between shipped vs sold is 1.31 million.

That should be pretty close considering stock has seemed low lately, not just OLED but the original & Lite models have been hard to come by in my my area at least.

"For Nintendo Switch hardware, we reduced our forecast by 1.50 million units to
24.00 million units. Our shipment forecast for the second half was reduced
because of the change in our production plan due to the effects of the global
semiconductor shortage."

That is disappointing.  We all knew the chip shortage was a factor though.  I was hoping it was less of a factor than this.  This news is not shocking, but it is disappointing.  Looks like that report that said Nintendo's forecast is down was partially right.  It is down to 24m, but it's adjusted from an original 25.5m and not 30m.

Checking the numbers, that means Nintendo expects the next two quarters to be approximately flat YoY.  However, that also means they will definitely be down for the whole year (both fiscal year and calendar year).  Last year really was Switch's peak year.

On the software side, Animal Crossing looks to be the 2nd best evergreen title for this FY, but Mario Kart is leaving it in the dust.  Animal Crossing is going to have some impressive lifetime sales when all is said and done, but Mario Kart 8 will have to be put into a category all on its own.  RFA is the third best selling evergreen this FY, so I expect it to keep steadily climbing up the top 10.  Just give it time.

Super Mario Party still has better legs than I'd expect so far, but I think the new Mario Party game is going to eat into it's future sales.
