Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo quarterly sales update (To June 30th 2021) Switch 89.04 m

Pretty good results all things considered. Even if sales are lower the Q1 2020, I wouldn't call 2020 the winner just yet. Q3 is where 2021 has a shot at passing 2020.

Also, I edited the title, there's no such thing as June 31st.

How do these numbers compare to VGChartz tracking?

March 31st
Nintendo Shipments - 84.59m
VGC Sellthrough - 82.51m

June 30th
Nintendo Shipments - 89.04m
VGC Sell Through - 87.74m

If they wanted same difference between shipped and sold as before they would need to lower switch sales by 700k.

Only a Sith deals in absolute

I don't think this quarter losing against last year's will indicate any kind of trend regarding Switch sales and whether or not it will peak this year.

Last year's (fiscal) Q1 was ridiculously high because of a perfect storm and because of you know what, while last year's holiday was relatively disappointing. This year Q1 is 'normal', while it will likely have a better holiday season, fiscal Q3, that will even it out again. This fiscal year overal being lower than last, and as such last turning out to have been the peak, is still probable, but I doubt the difference will be by much. 2021 could even still come out on top because of the holiday. If I recall correctly either Wii or DS also won its best year, or one of the best, solely due to a big holiday, even though it lost other quarters (this statement is off the top of my head) handsomely.

Speaking calendar years, 2021 Q1 beat 2020 Q1, which means the difference now is minor, and again the holiday quarter, 2021 Q4, will likely be better so likewise using this metric, the difference between 2020 and 2021 will also be minor. I think for all intends and purposes, it'll turn out that it'll be fair enough to say that these years were flat.

Beside hardware, software, obviously, is still amazingly good.

why isnt the xenoblade games on that top list? they have sold more than 1 million individually. same with fire emblem three houses

I am a Nintendo fanatic.

A couple of takeaways:

Switch falls just short of 90 million in this quarter. At 4.45 million units in Q1 of this fiscal year, it is already trailing last fiscal year by 1.22 million after the Q1 of last year did 5.67 million units.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now just a mere 300k away from tying Mario Kart Wii for the best selling Mario Kart single SKU in franchise history. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also widened its gap over Animal Crossing New Horizons for best selling Nintendo Switch game. Sorry, Animal Crossing fans, but it looks like it's going to fall just short. Mario is still the king.

Smash Ultimate, Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Party are all selling at around the same pace. With Super Mario Party passing 15 million, it should have a very good shot of reaching 20 million some time next year. That should be a very good sign for Mario Party Superstars.

Pokemon Sword/Shield continues its steady march towards Gold/Silver for the 2nd best selling Pokemon games of all time. At its current pace, it should pass Gold/Silver just in time for the release of Bright Diamond/Shining Pearl. (So much for the boycott.)

Ring Fit Adventure, I mean just wow.

Mario Kart 8 Delux is done. There is no way Nintendo comes out with more content for it, and I suspect 9 is only a couple years away (I predict it is a Switch 2 launch title coming in 2023). 8 Delux sales will drop off considerably after 9 is announced, and even more so after it comes out. ACNH, however, is young in its life and just had additional content announced that is in development. That game won't be replaced probably until, minimum, 2025, and it will sell well again once that new content drops. If Nintendo commits to constantly pumping out new content for AC ever year (whether free or not) it will easily crush MK8D. If the new content is a joke and they don't ever add more meaningful content (which would be extremely stupid considering how popular the game is) then MK8D will win the battle lifetime.

Comparing revenue is non-sense, Sony and MS spend way more money, and their console cost way more too. When you compare profits, Nintendo is number 1

Exactly. I don't know why we even compare revenue. It manipulates people into thinking a company is having tremendous success or failure. Profits > Revenue

Mario Kart games don't stop selling after a successor comes out. MK7 sold for years after the release of MK8 and MK8D. This isn't a Pokemon game. ACNH now selling less than MK8D each quarter means ACNH is never taking the crown.

There's a whole bunch of games that aren't in that list; Mario Maker, Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion.. you name it. This is because with quarterly reports, Nintendo only ever updates the Top 10 list (for every console), plus mentions the games that sold over 1M units during the previous quarter. None of those games however, and Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, sold a million copies in this timeframe. With yearly reports, Nintendo also mentions those games that sold over 1M during the previous fiscal year, aside from also updating the Top 10 list.

We have our estimates overtracked for the Switch. I'm not sure if we would have the exact same gap as shipped vs sold last year.

As of right now here are the numbers:

Shipped: 89.04m (June 30)

Sold: 88.12m (July 3). So something like ~87.95m sold on June 30 for a gap of 1.09m.

For quarter ending March 31, 2021:

Shipped: 84.59m

Sold: 83.02m (April 3) So somewhere around ~82.8m sold on March 31 for a gap of 1.79m

So on the high end we are 700,000 overtracked for the quarter. However, I think Nintendo has moved some of their production to the OLED model, so a smaller gap would make sense in that regards.

Anyone have the Famitsu numbers for the March quarter vs June quarter? Shipment numbers are 100K higher, but what is the increase in sold numbers?

100 k from the official data? if this the shipment is because Famitsu don´t tracker amazon and Nintendo online store.
