The point of the cardboard bed is combating the enormous waste the games generate. The beds (mattress included) are fully recyclable and will be turned into paper and plastic products after the games. They're rated for 440 pounds. 18,000 beds are provided for the Olympics.

You know the games were a bad idea (to hold right now) when the WHO supports them...

Speaking to the International Olympic Committee members at their session in the Japanese capital, Tedros said the world needed the Olympics now "as a celebration of hope."

"The Olympics have the power to bring the world together, to inspire, to show what's possible," he said.

"May the rays of hope from this land illuminate a new dawn for a healthy, safer and fairer world," he said, holding aloft an Olympic Games torch. "It is my sincere hope the Tokyo Games succeed."

And in the same breath

Tedros criticized the vaccine discrepancies between countries, saying the pandemic could be ended if G20 economies showed collective leadership and there was a fairer distribution of vaccines.

"Instead of being deployed widely, vaccines have been concentrated in the hands and arms of a lucky few," he said.

"The pandemic will end when the world chooses to end it. It is in our hands," he said. "We have all the tools we need. We can prevent this disease, we can test for it and we can treat it."

Isn't it the job of the World Health Organization to do something about that?? Yes it is in your hands...

So far there have been 67 cases of COVID-19 infections in the country among those accredited for the Games since July 1, despite strict entry measures.

Japan, whose vaccination program has lagged that of most other developed nations, has recorded more than 840,000 cases and 15,055 deaths and Games host city Tokyo is experiencing a fresh surge, with 1,387 cases recorded on Tuesday.

I'm only interested in Men's basketball and some of the track and field events. The other events don't really spark my interest.

I also care that my tax money is being wasted on an event that's going to bring literally nothing to the country. No tourism, no ticket revenue, nothing worthwhile. I'm pretty opposed to holding any event full stop unless it can at least break even and therefore not waste taxpayer money.

Olympics have always been money pits. It was in the Barcelona Olympics of '92 that changed, and one of the first times a host got their money back from tourism revenues. Now countries bids fight to the death, bribing the IOC to get selected.

Shame covid happened, but the damn Olympics would have also delayed my Japanese trip by one year due to the hike of prices that come with it. They need their money back ;)

I'm pretty sure the Dream Team helped a lot in sparking interest in the '92 games.  They also spend a ton of money promoting it so yeah I can see why it was profitable.

The vast majority of Olympics haven't been profitable because they went way over budget. Any easy fix to increase revenue for at least the summer games is to have it last longer there are more then enough events now that they can spread them out over more days and have it last at least three weeks instead of cramming them all in in just a little over two weeks. That would increase the chance of having more overall visitors and having more events at or near full capacity.

I never have any hope for Honduras winning any medal ever, Not even winning bronze we are one of the worst countries to ever compete , we just suck.

You should lobby them for a shoot em up event or even better some obscure game your really good at.

I agree there were changes starting with LA and its commercial model but they need to continue to change, take the future Brisbane games they will be the most decentralised games ever and 90% of the events will be held in existing venues, and while Brisbane is fortunate that having been a recent commonwealth games host it has many venues that only need refurbishment there are still lessons to be learned from their approach with a large percentage of the money being spent coming from pre existing sporting infrastructure commitments from the State and Federal govt along with National and local sporting bodies that were in the pipeline and at the top end the billion dollar large stadia budget being underpinned by using financing already assured for the development of new and existing AFL/ Cricket and Rugby League stadia so the Olympics get the use of large state of the art stadiums for the duration of games and large Australian professional sports get a better deal from a funding and timeline perspective than they would using the normal infrastructure upgrade path, meanwhile the Queensland govt gain from the post olympic economic activity that these new expansions generate compared to the old infrastructure  and certainty of utilisation and avoiding the extra costs associated with a later construction date, while the other smaller venues and their sports get a much needed and sustainable boost to their infrastructure with hopefully no white elephants.

So if certain parts can be made translatable to other games this helps the Olympics be looked at as an aid to future development rather than the reason for that development.

I'm keeping a close eye on cycling and Carapaz.

Hope he'll do better than on the Tour.

Do you know how the circuit is? Is it hilly or flat? Apparently, it's like a mountain stage, with long but with relatively gentle climbs, so he has a shot there.

I'm hoping for Kevin Geniets as one possible contender from Luxembourg to finally win a medal after 1952. The track layout should suit him relatively well.
