The vast majority of Olympics haven't been profitable because they went way over budget. Any easy fix to increase revenue for at least the summer games is to have it last longer there are more then enough events now that they can spread them out over more days and have it last at least three weeks instead of cramming them all in in just a little over two weeks. That would increase the chance of having more overall visitors and having more events at or near full capacity.

I agree there were changes starting with LA and its commercial model but they need to continue to change, take the future Brisbane games they will be the most decentralised games ever and 90% of the events will be held in existing venues, and while Brisbane is fortunate that having been a recent commonwealth games host it has many venues that only need refurbishment there are still lessons to be learned from their approach with a large percentage of the money being spent coming from pre existing sporting infrastructure commitments from the State and Federal govt along with National and local sporting bodies that were in the pipeline and at the top end the billion dollar large stadia budget being underpinned by using financing already assured for the development of new and existing AFL/ Cricket and Rugby League stadia so the Olympics get the use of large state of the art stadiums for the duration of games and large Australian professional sports get a better deal from a funding and timeline perspective than they would using the normal infrastructure upgrade path, meanwhile the Queensland govt gain from the post olympic economic activity that these new expansions generate compared to the old infrastructure  and certainty of utilisation and avoiding the extra costs associated with a later construction date, while the other smaller venues and their sports get a much needed and sustainable boost to their infrastructure with hopefully no white elephants.

So if certain parts can be made translatable to other games this helps the Olympics be looked at as an aid to future development rather than the reason for that development.
