New. Game Gear (GG)
Global - 10.62
Japan - 1.78

That 10.62 comes from famitsu vol 306 but the cutoff is march 1996. It had Japan at 1.78M and overseas at 8.84 M thats a total of 10.62 millions. To that we have to add whatever Sega sold from the end of march 1996 to April 1997 and whatever Majesco sold when they got a license from sega to manufacture the Game Gear.

this IGN article says on the first line of the seventh paragraph: Yet, the machine did find an audience of approximately 11 million around the world.

PS5 has now outsold the Sega Saturn.

True, it has globally. What's insane to think about is that it still has sold 5 million less in Japan than the Saturn did. PS5 will probably finish its run years from now in Japan with similar numbers to the PS4, if not lower. I don't think a PlayStation platform can ever sell 10 million or more in Japan ever again. Even PS3 only managed 10.37 million in Japan despite not getting discontinued until 2017.

As I mentioned in my other post, Nintendo is really the only relevant platform holder in Japan. Sony has somewhat of a presence, and Xbox is almost nonexistent. Though the Series S/X seem to be doing slightly better in Japan so far than the Xbox One did at this point, apparently.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I don't know if I could say with confidence PS5 will sell less than PS4 in Japan as I am kind of expecting some aggressive moneyhatting of stuff like Dragon Quest, and for the moment I believe it's tracking ahead of PS4 in terms of hardware, but yeah the days of Sony being a competitive player in Japan are over.

The Switch could well end up tripling its sales there.

I'm still wondering just where the PS5 would be if they could produce enough. However, would they still have the momentum/hype they have if the system was readily available.

Had similar thoughts myself about both consoles. Is the lack of availability adding to it's success? I've read multiple times on this very forum about Nintendo and artificial demand to increase the allure...

Obviusly covid isn't artifical but the point is worth discussion.

It is definately a good discussion piece. Everyone wants what they can't have. And the PS5 has so much hype due to FOMO. The Series X and S have it as well, but they seem to be worse off on getting product made.

NS up again, PS5 down again.
XS down just a little, so for this week it worsens compared to NS, but it betters compared to PS5. Still third after both by a huge margin, anyway, but a little joy is better than no joy at all.

Sony has never cared about Dragon Quest, Nintendo does.

Sony are known to moneyhat though, and DQ12 being an Unreal Engine 5 game doesn't suggest it's targeting Switch.

Sony usually money hats Final Fantasy, they never ever cared about Dragon Quest. Nintendo pushed Dragon Quest starting with the very first game. DQ sells mainly in Japan and making DQ XII Playstation exclusive would kill it fast. UE5 is suported by the Switch doesn't need to mean much. It only makes it unlikely that it's Switch exclusive.

That said, I expect the PS5 to sell less than 9mil, closee to 7mil in Japan.
