I don't mind it, except for the underlined words in peoples posts. It just makes the site seem unprofessional.

Haha, no, you're right! I browse with javascript turned off. Turns out, that's why I wasn't seeing it! Sorry for the confusion, and yes, I agree, those should go, I'd never click on an add that was shown to me that way...
I don't like the ads with sound or the full page click-throughs. But really, the ads have gotten less annoying over time on the whole.
NPD has nothing to do with anything. VGC is successful because it offers numbers sooner, from more markets, for more games, and for free, which is perfect for casual enthusiasts.
NPD is for more upscale customers. VGC and NPD really don't compete.
Complaining about the ads as a stealth way to attack the numbers is lame. If you value accuracy more than timliness, cost, larger compilations of data, etc., then stick with NPD. There are some yahoos who ramble about "representative samples" to insinuate VGC's numbers might be more accurate, but frankly, NPD is waaay more accurate, and every reasonable person knows it. But VGC represents other values for low end customers.
NPD was stupid to ignore low tier customers, and if Ioi capitalizes off of that financially, I say more power to him.

I dont care about the amount of ads currently as long as it doesnt get any worse im fine with it. However the ad with the zap the mosqito thing seriously makes me want to punch my screen, i shouldnt have to turn the volume down especially as im often watching tv on my computer at the same time.
There should be a ban on ads that make noise!

VG Chartz is actually about much more than just the data - over 1/3 of the monthly hits are from the forum and another 15% from the game database, 10% from user profiles. So well over half of the impressions we serve are nothing to do with the sales charts. If myspace, facebook, every forum in existance can advertise then why can't we? Take the immense overhead of putting out numbers each week out of the equation if you want to and view the site as a social networking / forum (which is why you say you are here). As for the numbers being inaccurate - did you look at this months software vs NPD? Decent match as far as I'm concerned and actually pretty amazing all things cosidered that we even get as close as we do. You are obviously pretty ignorant to statistics and sampling to have made some of the comments you have. So as others have stated, if you don't like the ads and you don't like the numbers then find another site to frequent. |
