Rumour: The Next Donkey Kong Is Being Developed By The Super Mario Odyssey Team - Nintendo Life

Words cannot express how happy I am even to hear about a rumor on this! I LOVE Donkey Kong 64 so something that isn't just a 2-d game would be amazing!

This rumour is also backed up by recent comments made by leaker Zippo:

"It's the big ape's 40th anniversary, and while I'm not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series. Don't expect the "Country" moniker to return, as EPD Tokyo are not interested in making a sequel to games they didn't make. Diddy, Cranky and the Kremling Krew should all be returning in this installment. It sounds like this game is launching before the end of the year. An E3 announcement seems very likely."

well the article does say they've heard it's gonna be 2.5D not 3D

Has there ever been a mainline in-house DK game other than the original arcade games?? Original trilogy and DK 64 were Rare with DKC Returns/Tropical Freeze being Retro. I'd be VERY interested to see what Nintendo is capable of if this true! I would prefer it to be a 3D game, but I'll always take a brand new DK game!

I know, that's why I said "something that isn't just a 2-d game". That was acknowledging that it would be more than 2-d, which 2.5d would be.

I think Donkey Kong for the Game Boy (1994) was developed by the old Nintendo EAD. It was a new game that used the same style and core gameplay as the original arcade game, but with a crap ton of new and revamped mechanics, a lot more levels, more music, better graphics... It's probably one of the best games on the Game Boy:

As for this rumor... More Donkey Kong is always a good thing, and if it's a bigger project than usual even better!

Sounds too good to be true. Its like hearing the Zelda team is making something else than Zelda. Just hard to believe.
