So most third-parties, with the exception of Konami, decreased to some of their lowest numbers (or their lowest) in 2020, while Nintendo reached their peak. The case of Level 5 is particularly tragic.

bet against the market leader.

With even Capcom throwing their hat into the ring big time with Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Ghosts 'n' Goblins Resurrection, and apparently a new RE game, it's about time for some Japanese thirds to pull their head out of their behinds. It really does feel like blind brand loyalty at this point more than any objective business sense.

If Capcom has 5 games for this year. Congratulations Capcom for the late, but good, support.

Yikes, that's insanely low for Level-5, but I guess that's what happens when you milk every game you make to death and beyond. Seriously, they have to be one of the most mismanaged game companies out there.

Abyssmal sales for Namco Bandai and Capcom, though the latter is going to have a good 2021 thanks to Monster Hunter.

Nintendo having a peak year with Animal Crossing, Pokemon company not so much.

Great Video

Well, three. Monster Hunter Rise, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, and Monster Hunter Stories 2 this year, Resident Evil early next year apparently. But yeah, it's a huge step up for them after nearly 4 years of dusty old ports.

That's what happens when you stupidly cling to a declining brand and ignore the platform that holds a near-monopoly over the country.

TOTAL: 10.303.840

Top 10 Publishers:

  1. Konami - 2.582.457 (+382%)
  2. Bandai Namco - 1.991.860 (-3%)
  3. Microsoft - 1.797.233 (+25%)
  4. Square Enix - 1.219.448 (+8.5%)
  5. Sega - 524.808 (-6.6%)
  6. Level 5 - 468.311
  7. Capcom - 379.611 (+22.6%)
  8. Koei Tecmo - 338.046 NEW
  9. Marvelous -293.386 (+100%)
  10. Ubisoft - 213.453

Personally outside of Momotaro, eBaseball, Sakuna & Age of Calamity - I don't think 2020 was anything to write home about from third parties.

This are changing with Capcom, Konami and Marvelous being the ones to capitalize the most in the next 4-5 months.

Konami Top 5*:

  1. Momotaro Dentetsu - 1.789.756
  2. Super Bomberman R3 - 275.029
  3. eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 - 269.648
  4. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball - 248.024

Konami has only launched 4 games on the Switch but had a huge jump YoY due to finding the first 3rd Party hit on the system outside of MinecraftBomberman & eBaseball continued to sale and are closing in on 300K, its very likely that Momotaro ends up being a game that surpasses 3 million sales this year and maybe they also have ProEvolutionSoccer on the system for the first time in 2021. So things are looking very good for them.

Bandai Namco Top 5:

  1. Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version - 563.929
  2. Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! - 554.560
  3. Disney Tsum Tsum Festival - 185.990
  4. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 - 181.090
  5. Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission - 145.720

The second biggest publisher on the Switch Bandai will face difficulties in 2021 based on their lack of announcements for the Switch. It's very likely that by the end of 2021 games in the 100-200K range drop out of the Top 30 because the floor continues to accelerate upwards. This would leave only Fishing Spirits and Taiko contributing to their total.

Square Enix Top 5:

  1. Dragon Quest XI S - 618.154
  2. Dragon Quest Builders 2 - 295.237
  3. Octopath Traveller - 193.780
  4. Trials of Mana - 112.277
  5. Dragon Quest Builders - 74.772

Square does have Bravely Default 2, but without any other announcements that could break 200K they could also start losing ground.

Sega Top 5:

  1. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - 370.235
  2. Puyo Puyo S - 154.573
  3. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix - 97.056
  4. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - 87.370
  5. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 - 56.406

Interestingly for Sega, 2020 was probably their best year on the Switch - Mario & Sonic, Hatsune Miku, Puyo Puyo S & Puyo Puyo 2 sold over 350K

Level 5 Top 5:

  1. Yo-kai Watch 4 - 358.356
  2. The Snack World: TreJarers Gold - 109.955
  3. Yo-kai Watch Jam: Yo-kai Academy Y - 42.077
  4. Layton's Mystery Journey - 20.336
  5. Yo-Kai Watch 1 - 13.779

The trouble for Level 5 continues as their only new release in 2020 Yo-Kai Academy Y, didn't even manage 50K sales

Level 5 from the greatness of the DS era to it's peak during the Yokai-Watch craze and now completely crumbled since the Switch launched.

Fuck around and find out I guess. A new dominant console took over Japan and they were either too short-sighted, too stubborn, or both, to take advantage as a sensible company would.

Also, how on Earth did they manage to, well, mis-manage Yokai Watch from a megaton franchise to one where the 4th entry hasn't cracked 400k?

Those sales are only for the physical edition which launched in December. The game was already released digitally in August and it is known that it´s selling well. The anime series is having a second season also.

please define "well", Yo-Kai Watch 4 sold 350K which was, to put it lightly disappointing; even with absurd digital sales Academy Y is very unlikely to have surpassed 200K. Currently Level 5 is basically living off huge discounts on the eShop, but without new games, that won't keep them afloat forever.
