Not a big deal. I do wonder why they didn't drop the resolution instead though. Seems the "go to" choice for handheld mode. The game, expansion? IDK, will review and sell like mad anyway.

Were any resolution numbers given?
I mean its possible the resolution is already low when docked.

Main game is 1080p docked, 720p portable.
The expansion is 720p both docked and portable.
Not a big deal to me, especially when we talk about the single-player game, however the longer we stuck with the ageing hardware the more of those inconsistencies we will see. It's time for an upgrade Nintendo.

I'm pretty sure it's Odyssey engine for Bowser's Fury

It would be interesting if that were the case, but the game seems to have a lot more in common visually with 3D World than Odyssey. It's technically possible, I suppose. We'll have to see once it comes out.

I don't know, I saw that the physics seem to be the same as Odyssey, the camera, the texture style, even when Mario gets a shine, it's the same animation as when you get a moon in Odyssey. And of course the 3D sandbox environment in 60 fps.

I wouldn't be surprised if the moments where Fury Bowser appears on screen is when the game would tank the most in terms of performance, prolly why they locked the FPS to 30 in handheld. |
There's also a chance the game had an unstable frame rate in general, but perhaps the Bowser transformation indeed made the game tank to the 30s-40s, so yeah, it could've played a big factor.
My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Okay, so the resolution is already on the lower side when docked.
Having an idea of the Switch can do, I imagine they could do 60 fps at 480p or maybe a little higher. Which actually wouldn't look terrible on the small screen. Also a resolution I believe Vita games aimed for in GPU heavy titles.
If I am correct, it would be nice if they gave an option but I find that unlikely. Either way, 30 fps is playable and will look great on the Switch screen.

It could be a matter of visibility; when exploring a large open world like the one in Bowser's Fury they may have found that targeting a lower resolution like 576p or 540p or something on the smaller screen made it harder to scout out distant Cat Shines and other distant details.
