Forums - Gaming Discussion - System Defining Games

PAOerfulone said:

Every video game system, whether it be console ot handheld, has its library of games that everyone remembers fondly enjoying on that system. But I believe there is always that ONE game in particular that serves as THE game on the system. For a multitude of reasons: Quality, sales (software AND hardware), franchise or genre defining, pushing the system to its absolute graphical and technical limits, taking full advantage of the system’s unique hardware or gimmicks (Motion Controls, Touch Screen), etc. Basically, if you think of that system, you think of that game.

For me, personally:

NES - Super Mario Bros.

SNES - Super Mario World

Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog

N64 - Super Mario 64

PS1 - Final Fantasy VII

GB/GBC - Pokémon Red/Blue

PS2 - GTA: San Andreas

GBA - Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire

OG Xbox - Halo 2

GameCube - Super Smash Bros. Melee

Wii - Wii Sports

DS - New Super Mario Bros.

360 - Halo 3

PS3 - Last of Us

3DS - Pokémon X/Y

Wii U - Smash 4

XOne - Halo 5

PS4 - Last of Us 2

NSW - Breath of the Wild

I think I'll mostly agree with this list except for WiiU - I would put either Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon here. And Xbox One, which in my opinion doesn't really have "that one" game.

It is hard for me to wrap my head around someone putting Halo 2 ahead of Halo: CE as the defining game of the XB. Halo: CE is a legendary title.
It launched a series that has been huge for nearly 20 years since.

Those are mostly great games.  But, you can't really have more than one "defining" game for a system.  That's just not possible with the definition of defining that we are using here.  I guess I can see where you might have 2-3 way tie on a system or two.  But, you've tossed out the spirit of the exercise here.

I'd like to see your list narrowed to 1 game per system.

Going by the "If you think about that system, you think about that game" premise:

NES: Super Mario Bros (Tho SMB3 would fit too)
SNES: Chrono Trigger
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
GC: Metroid Prime
Wii: SM Galaxy
WiiU: Mario Kart 8
Switch: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Gameboy: Pokemon Red/Blue
Gameboy Color: Pokemon Silver/Gold
Gameboy Advanced: Golden Sun
NDS: New Super Mario Bros
N3DS: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
PS1: Final Fantasy VII
PS2: Final Fantasy XII
PS3: Uncharted 2.
PS4: Bloodborne
PSP: FF7: Crisis Core
XBOX: Halo: Combat Evolved
XBOX360: Gears of Wars
XBOXONE: Wouldnt know. GOW4 I guess.

Panzer Dragoon-Sega Saturn
Shenmue-Dreamcast
Persona 4 Golden-PSVita
Wonderboy 3-Sega Master System
