Better hardware means better gaming. You’ll see the difference. If you’re not getting hyped about any particular next gen games then the gaming media isn’t doing their job to reach you as a customer and potentially losing your patronage.

Topic seems fine where it is. Content is a little... eh. It'd be better if you expanded a bit more on what precisely you expected from the next gen that you're not seeing. I'd also recommend leaving the Switch out of it, since whether intentionally or not that seems bound to start some console war style arguments.

Was more just looking for other people's opinions on the matter.

As for what I was looking for, just something besides a focus on trying to make games "prettier".  Every "next gen" system is only worried about graphic fidelity, teraflops, etc.  Where is the "next gen" gameplay?

As for the mention of the Switch, that is what I consider the current leader of "next gen".  The games/gameplay have been more revolutionary than anything else released in the last 3 years.

There is more to next generation games than graphics and I just haven't seen it from Microsoft/Sony.

So... yeah, here's the thing...

It's fine to not be hyped for the next gen. I'm honestly not.

It's also fine to really like the Switch. I do.

What's not fine is to make a topic that is about next generation gaming when what you really want to do is talk about how the Switch is so much better than what Microsoft and Sony are doing. That's baiting, and it's not cool. And the initial mention of the Switch, and this response, sort of make it seem like that's what you're trying to do.

So, since Nintendo is not releasing a new console in the near future, let's keep the conversation focused on the companies that are. Otherwise, topic's probably going to get locked.

Every gen it's like this now.
PS4 was PS3.5, there was no need for a next gen in 2013!
Now PS4 is fine, PS5 isn't impressive, no need for next gen!
Then let's wait for the PS6, when the PS5 will be fine and there won't be no need for it.
Just look at TLoU and TLoU2 and you'll know what kind of quality jump to expect on next gen, then add to it.
Next gen will sure be exciting.

I think there's a degree of diminishing returns.

Difference is smaller still.

Obviously there are limitations to comparing screenshots from individual titles. Different compression genres, etc. (and tbh I did check to make sure screenshots were on the original hardware, but things get mislabled on the net), but I think if you compare the best looking games from the end of one generation to the best looking launch titles of the next, the gap is getting consistently smaller. And especially because this time around we had mid gen boosts to the consoles, the gap shrinks further. Whether or not that's enough to excite is an individual thing. For me though, not really.

Its not really fair to compare early PS5 games to late PS4 games.

On that metric you should put up Ghost of Tsushima verses Horizon: Forbidden West since they are using the same engine. But here's HZ1 vs HZ2. There's clearly a leap up in fidelity. Right click to see images in full size for better comparison.

I think it's fair because it shows the immediate benefit of being an early adopter. What level of fidelity is available to me now, vs what I'll gain by upgrading. I'm sure the games will get better looking over time, and when that happens, my hype level will adjust accordingly.

Just saying we won't be seeing that impressive visuals until at least a couple years in. It takes time for developers to make use of new hardware and software/tools.

By the end years of PS5, we're gonna get amazing visuals. That goes for Series X as well if Hellblade 2 teaser is anything to go by.

Between Flight Simulator, the Unreal tech demo, Ratchet and Clank and Horizon, I'm very impressed.

Not sure how that isn’t fair... it’s pretty much the most fair way to do it.

Also, with horizon almost 2 years away... it seems silly to compare it to anything honestly, as what was shown will almost certainly be different in the end.  Also your pictures aren’t even the same size for a fair comparison... undoubtedly horizon 2 will look better, but in my opinion the differences don’t seem as big this generation as compared to previous.  Part of the problem with that is the mid gen upgrades that boosted performances...

Thing is though... with other systems that WOW factor was there very early on. Mario 64 blew away everything on the SNES. Sonic Adventure's visuals were jaw dropping in the day. Sonic the Hedgehog was waaaaaay more impressive than Kirby's adventure (which actually launched a couple of years later).

Not saying that PS5 won't have great looking games, but the jump just isn't as drastic.

Not interested in games as a service, which seems to be a primary feature of 9th gen. Graphics are diminishing returns. And all that aside, I’m a lot more more interested in next gen Nintendo than I am in the PS5 or XSX. I’ve had more fun with the Switch than I’ve had with a system in years. Will likely still get a PS5 at some point.
